Default Just got tugged by the old bill.....

..For doing 55 in a 60 zone!!!!!

Driving down a dual carrige(sp) way, national speed limit (60pmh) and I'm doing 55....

Old bill car pulls in behind me, flashes lights and sounds siren and indicates me to pull over, so we get to the roundabout where d/c ends and pull into the layby at the side of it.

I'm thinking "shit shit, must have somehow seen I wasn't wearing a seat belt" or "must have a brake light out" or something - buit wasn't thinking about speed as I knew I was only going 55!

So he says "do you know why I've pulled you over?" and I said no.

Then he says - "you were speeding"

I was like " Err, no mate I was doing 55!"

He then says "yes, you were doing 55, which is 5mph over the speed limit"

I said that it was a national speed limit d/c which - correct me if I am wrong - is 60mph.....

Then he hits me with that my vehicle is limited to 50mph on national speed limit d/c's as it is a commercial chassis vehicle!!!

I was like : WTF?

So he explained to me that because my van (Transit Connect, baby Transit thingy) isn't derived from a domestic chassis like an Escort van was or Fiesta van is, it's a 100% commercial chassis, and that according to the highway code, on any road bearing the national speed limit sign (other than motorways) my speed limit is 10mph LESS than the normal national limit!

I was lost for words! I just said to him I never had a clue about that, and wasn't aware of it at all!

Fortunately he said since I didn't know about it, he let me off Just said to me to take it on board for the future....

Weird!

Thats what I thought Jim, but apparently it applies to all commercial chassis vehicles, not matter of weight or size

89XR2 - I had never heard of it Thought it was only for vehicles above 3.5tonne.....

Definitely the law. Same as transit vans etc. have to do 60 on a motorway. Although if you're in a white van you're allowed to go as fast as is humanly possible, and undertake and generally drive like a wanker..

Actually. forget part of what I said. Vans are allowed to go 70 on the motorway but 60 on dual carriageways. I got myself confused with that bit.

Funny I just posted exactly this yesterday on another forum that alot of van drivers transits/sprinters etc aren't aware that they have a lower speed limit than cars on single carrageways (50) and dual carrageways (60)
There is no transit car so the goods vehicle (not exceeding 7.5tonne) speed limit applys. Things like the escort van and astra van will be classed as cars.

Right here's how the copper explained it to me.

For a vehicle that is NOT derrived from a domestic chassis (such as a Fiesta van), like my Transit connect (which is a 100% commercial chassis);

Any roads, other than M-Roads, that show the National Speed Limit sign : , the speed the commercial vehicle is allowed to travel is 10mph LESS than the National Limit (single A-road national limit is 50, commercial chassis limited to 40, dual carrigeway limit 60, commercial chassis limited to 50)

M roads do not apply except to restricted vehicles

Any roads showing the speed in numbers (for example, the London North Circular, that has 3 lanes and shows repeater signs for 50mph on most parts) the restriction does not apply (commercial chassis is allowed to do the indicated speed limit.

Okay, so THIS is the law..... So why did the copper stop me for doing 55, when a dual carriage way is 70, which means my van can go upto 60?

Unless it has to do with solid reservation d/c's ???

Dual Carriageways are 70mph (national speed limit) unless otherwise stated (i.e a 50mph road sign) - or at least that's what i thought anyway

This is where the confusion has arisen. Copper told me that the d/c was 60 for normal cars so 50 for me, but the signs say national speed limit. Which means 70 for normal cars and 60 for me. So I think he was confused, and he confused me

TBH, I thought d/c national limit was 60 aswell

So is a vw caddy van classed as a commercial vehicle or a car, also with crew cab pickups being classed as commercial vehicles do they have to abide by the same laws as well?

Spiky - if this is true then the copper was bang to rights then as the dual carriage I was on was not a solid reservation....
