Default My Big Brake Dilemna - FAO Experts - Mike R etc

I hope someone here can help me on this predicament....

Basically no-one does a big brake conversion for the 21 Turbo - so I decided...and rightly so I think - that if I'm going for a big power hike that I'm going to need good stoppers to compliment this - especially if I'm going to be doing track days, visiting the ring etc.... Standard front calipers are single pot...

So anyway....I've got my hand on a pair of Clio V6 330mm x 30mm discs that have the same stud pattern/offset as standard 21T discs - now I need a set of calipers/pads/brackets to go with these.

Problem being - the 21T for whatever French reason - have a fairly big bolt spacing - 125mm on the hubs to mount the calipers.

I'll let the pictures below explain the rest....

General Pic of Disc on hub with Caliper Mounted in perfect position

Reverse side of above perfect position...the problem arises....

People have said well its a radial mount so just move the caliper round a few degrees.....well no unfortunately not - its impossible because the hub mount protrudes over the inside of the disc that much that this is what happens...

Move it to the left..

Move it to the right...

As you can see the inside of the caliper touches the disc & the pads no longer sit squarely on the disc and foul the hub mount, as well as the edge of the pad being over the outer edge of the disc.

So my question really is how the hell am I going to solve this....I think that I need to go with brakes that have a much smaller mounting centre or a larger mounting centre measurement. I really do not want to start talking about welding new brackets to the hub etc.

Will I manage to get away with using 152mm mounting centre radial mount calipers - bearing in mind they 125mm mounting centre standard - by my calculations it will ONLY just do it - is this enough to be safe tho??? Porsche caliper is a 130mm mounting centre caliper in the picture.

I am after at least a 4 Pot caliper - possibly 6 depending on price - I'm running 18" wheels so outer clearance shouldnt be a problem!!!

Any help or recommendations gratefully received as this is now the only thing stopping me getting it MOT'd which I could do with doing in the next 2 weeks!!!!

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

why try to fit a radial mount caliper to a normal hub?

why not get some other calipers, for example 2wd cossie 4 pots (i run these with 330mm discs), range rover etc. will make the job a lot easier imo as new brackets are much simpler if needed.

...erm....because isnt that was most people do - especially cossie/RST owners - I had a lug mount AP caliper & again that was far too close to fitting - I did think that possibly an undrilled lug mount caliper could be an option!!!

I have thought about cossie calipers but then everyone upgrades them for APs, Brembos etc so I thought why bother do that when I'd probably want to upgrade them further in the future!!!

Lee IMHO having used cossie calipers they aint as good as princess 4pots but are easier and cheaper to find...

Are you running a brake servo etc ?

I just had a thought though, what size are the discs on the picture ? 330 ?

Hence the question about the 152mm radial mount calipers - AP, Wilwood etc perhaps - will they mount up ok??

Dingy - discs are 330mm x 30mm (stated in the original post ya blind )

No its not running a servo - I know its French but now ya taking the piss - it runs the Teves II braking system with ABS - master cylinder jobbie - very very similar to a cossie - it needs to be when the car weighs 1300kgs!!!

You genius - course it can - how fuckin obvious is that now you've just mentioned it!!!!

That would mean that it doesnt matter that the mounting points are very close together because I'd thread the adaptor plate where it mounts to the caliper & I've obviously got the depth of the square lugs to screw into which would now be part of the adaptor plate & I can just use a bolt to screw into the hub as that is threaded anyway!!!!

Martin.....I owe you a beer - thank you!!!!

Its amazing what a fresh pair of eyes can achieve!!!!

....and Dingy!!!!

Never mind saying 'I told you it was possible' - all you kept saying is move the caliper round a few degrees when I knew for a fact I couldnt!!!

Whats exactly is unclear from those pictures anyway!!!??? Sorry did you want them in 5.2MegaPixel instead sir!!!

as i said, i have cossie 4 pots on 330mm discs and the pad area fits well. they work very well, and the piston size stays matched to the master cylinder size. you wouldn't believe what a difference a rebuild can make. usually just removing the pistons and tipping out the watery old shitty brake fluid is enough to prevent fade in a lot of cases.

the only reason to upgrade cossie 4 pots should be to get a lighter weight caliper (probably ally) for less unsprung weight and / or a larger pad area. i think most people 'upgrade' to AP's or Brembos just to get the name rather than any other benefit, and it's not worth the extra cost imo.

glad you seem to have it sorted though, keep us posted and show us when you've done it

UPDATE - Cross referenced the Porsche part number only to find that they were the rears off a Boxster S so really they were no good for the job - pistons were too small!!! So they've gone to a more suitable home.

Awaiting delivery of a pair of AP 6600s to go on.

But in the meantime over the weekend - big thanks to Jonno (^NUTTER^) - this weekend he made the brackets for the calipers for me - we used the Porsche brakes as a guideline because the offset, mounting etc are identical to the new units I'm getting - they are currently sitting a bit high because of the lugs on the Porsche caliper - once we get hold of the new calipers we can rectify this.

Fair play to Jonno for taking his time & making a top class job of them - cheers fella!!!

Few pics.....

** UPDATE **

Got my new AP 6600s mounted onto my spare hub now...

Big thanks to Nutter again for finishing the brackets off for me - they have been helicoiled also to help stop the caliper bolts pulling out should they decide they dont like being attached to a french hub!!!

Also thanks to JC Motorsport for supplying me with the calipers & pads at a fantastic price!!!

Only one last problem to overcome.....now I need 10mm spacers for the wheels to clear the calipers!!!

how much did you pay if you dont mind me asking? my bro bought some brackets that just need machining down, but doesnt know anyone too well who could machine them to fit some Porsche Calipers to his Golf. they are cast steel, cant find a link to them though. they do around £100 on ebay. but he got them for about £50 i believe, some of these, or like these looked more suitable, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Front-Brake-Ca...QQcmdZViewItem

but are abviously a little expensive and not the right ones!
anyway, more to the point, how much would i be looking for someone off here to do some? similar to these ?
he has a decent rear setup, but does not want to put them on until he has the 312mm tt disks and some calipers (he has some lug mount old brembo porsche ones, but he wants some off a boxter s/911!)

thanks
