Default Underfloor heating...... Another Q at bottom of thread!!

Just to take the chill of the tiles in a bathroom.

Who has done it? What's a good system to use? Obviously, it needs to follow an awkward shape, being a bathroom (i.e. around the bog, basic and bath).

I have seen some good systems on the 'net, but would like to hear peoples experiences.

looked into this for my garage/conservatory. dont go well coupled with normal radiator system as the underfloor heating takes a lot longer to heat up than the rads. means your boiler is running for longer to heat different parts of your house.

just make sure you use a flexible adhesive and grout when laying the tiles ontop. i normally have to sink the end of the heating mat into the floor as the end of the cable is normally thicker than the matting itself. have a look in the screwfix catalogue that stuff they sell is spot on. it needs to be fed from its own fused spur or directly into the consumer box.

As an Building services engineer trying to reduce carbon ratings I shouldnt really promote underfloor heating, but I have it through our place, definately go for a wet system mate!!!

PM me if you'd like some detils of where to go, I can get decent discount at a number of places mate.

I'm fairly good with electrics. We just want a fairly simple system, the room already has its own heating, so its just to warm the tiles.

Also, could do without too much height as the floor meets the hall floor which is also tiled, but not heated.

dont really make it any higher than a normaly tiled floor,u need to get one with a floor stat not room stat as the central heating will turn off the floor heating, u need a fuse spur to power it which u can get power from a near buy skt

CheeRS guys.

One other thing, its a timber suspended floor, we read that you should only use a certain power level with this type of floor?

Another question.....

Can you lay electric underfloor heating cables onto a surface that has been PVA'd?

We have a P5 Chipboard base and had planned to PVA it prior to tiling.

IMO I understood that you have to use thermal boarding over the wooden floor and then lay the matting (klima matting is what Screfix sell) into the tile adhesive and hook up. Should be relatively easy...just means you will have the height of the tile plus height of grout/adhesive/matting and height of thermal board on top of the floor.

That's what I'll be doing on my second bathroom. Screfix is cheaper than anywhere else too

Good luck

Dave

CheeRS guys for your help.

The system we are looking at is a loose cable system. I am confident in the fitting of it and am sure that it is far more versatile that the matting when you have a number of 'obstacles' to work around. It is thermostatically controlled and we plan to use it as a supplement, not as the main heat source, so we will probably have it on whenever the Central heating is on, just at a low temperature.

I have found the kits for a fantastic price, which I am more than happy with, it's just that the company that make it say that it should not be fitted on chipboard. When I asked them why, they can't really answer me. Trouble is, we have already laid P5 chipboard, so don't really want to take it up unless we really have to.

So, can anyone say why this type of heating may not be suitable to a chipboard floor? I usually PVA chipboard prior to tiling, aswell as using a proper tile-on-wood adhesive, but I imagine that the PVA won't like the heating.

I really need to answer this, help!!

You do know that any new wiring has to be signed off by a spark? As you said, the heat is the reason why they dont recommend it. Doesn't mean it wont be ok, but just they can say told you so if it falls apart
