DVLA need to know about engine size/number change. (as would insurance co.)
If you have modified the shell, and you go for Vosa SVA you'll end up on a Q plate, but be able to have Focus Cosworth on the V5.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regrebil.htm Section B
B. Radically Altered Vehicles
This covers vehicles which are substantially altered from their original specification, but which are not kit conversions.
In these cases the vehicle components used from the original vehicle will be given a numerical value and, in order to retain the original registration mark the vehicle must score eight or more points.
If less than eight points are scored or a second-hand or modified chassis or altered monocoque bodyshell is used an ESVA/SVA/MSVA certificate will be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.
The following values will be allocated to the major components used:
Points
Chassis/body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque)* (original or new) = 5
Suspension = 2
Axles = 2
Transmission = 2
Steering Assembly = 2
Engine = 1
*Direct replacement from the manufactures
************************************************** ******
If you are doing front wheel drive, it should be o.k
If its rear wheel drive you must have altered the floor pan therefore "Q" plate IF you go for SVA.

If you dont tell them, it wont need inspecting, it wont be put on a Q...
But do notify DVLA of engine number and cc changes
I had an escort estate years back, I stripped it to a bare shell and replaced everthing with RS Turbo stuff, engine box suspension loom interior etc etc In theory I should have told them and had it inspected and based upon their guidelines it would have then become a Q (as the only original part was the actual shell and glass, doors bonnet tailgate etc all changed)
Whats the point though!! Just sent off the V5 with change of colour, then sent it back a while later with change of engine cc and engine number ... job done!!
Fair enough though, mine was simply a unbolt and bolt on new bits jobby, not huge ammounts of fab work...
