the main problem is that ur new fitting will come with only 2 connections (Possibly 3rd for earth). U will find the rose u are replacing will have something like 7 wires. These basically form part of ur ring circuit and come from one room, and go to the next. Without going into detail, the easiest way is to make a note which wires are connected together electrically, and make sure they stay like that - by using say a terminal block. The wires which u connect to ur new fitting are the ones which currently connect to the bulb.

Run's in a circuit mate you have wires from the mains then it goes to the switch then to your lights(make sure you turn the electric off first).
Should be a earth to your switch somewhere.

I just been changing all sorts of light fittings and switches at my gfs place.
One of the switches she bought was an intermediate switch instead of the usual 2 way switch.
The intermediate switch has 4 contacts and are as follows:
L1 L1
L2 L2
No Common (COM) connection.
Just purely out of curiousity where would you use this type of switch?
a normal 2 way switch is configured as
COM
L1 L2
If I understood this correctly com is your common live and L1 and L2 are the live outputs depending on what position the switch is (i.e. L1 is live when the switch is up, and L2 is live when the switch is down)

so it works in the same way as 2 x 2 way switches to switch on the upstairs hallway light from both a downstairs switch and upstairs switch. But you use an intermediate switch if you want a 3rd (or more) switch in the circuit?

If you know a spark, get him to do it. I would charge a mate a couple of pints for a job like that and it won't get fooked up then ! lol
Are you putting in low voltage or 240 volt fittings ?
How many grey wires are there coming into the old fitting ?
