Intereference i the multiplugs across teh firewall.
As a first measure, disconnect and then reconnect them, see how you get on.

Exactly what i do and solves the problem paul.......Its the sensors that run across the back of the engine. I unplugged them, cleaned them and tested....All good You only had to ask

Depends what you call "Electrical Spray" For gods sake donst spray something like WD40 in, you will make it worse and more susceptible to problems. Just plug and unplug a few times if you dont have the correct (Expensive) electrical connection cleaner.

If this problem is recouring, the correct solution is to cut them out alltogether before they cause a breakdown.

Dont use any spray stu. Just do what you quoted, plug and unplug usually and wipe the insides of the plug And yes, have been advised on cutting and soldering the wires together

other options are the earth connections on the inlet plenum, and coil or ignition amplifier connections.

on 4x4 though, the bulkhead connections are favourite. Pay special attention to the one with the fewer larger wires

if its not the plugs along the firewall then its the phase sensor. Mine did exactly the same thing and it was the phase sensor !

before blaming the phase sensor and rushing out to buy a new one, on 4x4 try running the engine without the phase sensor connected and see if the tacho behaviour changes.. If it still does the same then it's not the sensor.. go looking for more poor connections in the coil path or earths on the plenum, engine earth strap, or body earth just in front of the battery.
