Default Rooney is a doubt for the World Cup

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...06/4957970.stm

Wayne Rooney is a doubt for the World Cup after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his right foot during Manchester United's game against Chelsea.
Rooney has been told he could be out for six weeks, exactly the amount of time until England's first match against Paraguay on 10 June.

Rooney was stretchered off late in Man Utd's defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Michael Owen was "not 100% happy" with his foot after returning from injury for Newcastle.

Not good news for England

Forget the world cup now lads as Owen is Englands only "natural" goalscorer, and Rooney was the only player we had that can drop deep pick a ball up take on a few players and finish.................can you name any other in his position that can do that????

deffo think we could cope without owen but rooney is a major blow. He is so strong and so hard to mark he gives teams nightmares. We have other strikers to replace owen, but nobody of the same type or caliber as rooney.

fingers and toes crossed that he be back in time!!!

Maybe he'll be fit enough to travel but have to miss out on the group stages then at least they would have him for the mportant games (assuming they get through the group without him which im sure they would)

every other player i can recall who has had the same injury as his has took at least 2-3 months before they even started training again, michael owen had the same injury and he just made his first appearance this year against birmingham yesterday, so it doesnt look good for rooney, i dont think they will even take him, which isnt good for englands chances, looks like crouch upfront then, not good news, and thats coming from a liverpool fan.

Agree m8 i don't think they can even name him in the squad, no way he will be right for at least 8-10 weeks

for me he's just using up a place that could be given to someone who is fit, saying that england arnt exactally over run with world class strikers with the exception of owen and rooney, and even if they can get him fit for the final if england get there he still wont be match fit, he is gona need a good 4 or 5 games just get anywhere near sharp, i hope i am 100% wrong and by some miracle he gets over it and plays, cos i dont fancy our chances without him.

at the end of the day owen would prob have had a shit world cup anyway as he'd be nowhere near his best after so long out.

as for rooney, yes he will be missed but one player doesnt win a world cup, footballs a team game and sven has to deliver, at the end of the day thats what the sweedish prick gets paid 5million a year for.

geoff hurst waan't 1st choice striker in 66 and look what he done. its upto defoe, crouch, bent, ashton to try and get in there and do a hurst and cement there name in history

I want to see England do well and win it, but I think it's fucking shocking that the English are relying so much on one 20 year old to do the business.

England should have more class than that, it's not a one man team.

In my opinion, shut the fuck up, stop whinning and prepare youselves for life without him...that's not aimed at anyone in particular btw.

I think Defoe is the best man there to replace him to be honest, mainly due to his experience. The likes of Bent, Ashton and Andy Johnson are good players, but their total lack of International experience won't do them any favours.

Crouch will definitely feature a lot I'd imagine, mainly for flicking headers on and being a target man in general. I'm a Liverpool fan personally, and he seriously offers a lot more than people know / think / give him credit for, he'd be more a threat to any of the players I listed above, bar Defoe maybe.

agreed totally with alloy

ashley cole and owen should not be in the team at all this summer as they not played all season. u look at how much stick beckham got for having a mediocre 2002 world cup.

rooney i'd take a gamble on and maybe use in last 20 mins of a game to turn it around if need be as he's a exceptional talent.

sven has gotta start using his head, were not gonna win the world cup with rio ferdinand in defence as hes wank.

lampard or gerrard should be in the middle with a holding player like carrick beside.

i'd also like to see little aaron lennon in the squad as he's probably one of the best wingers in the country at the moment

Agree too, I think Ferdinand is one of the most over rated players in the Premier League. I'd much rather see Carragher partnering Terry, I think Rio's price tag went to his head and he started taking on an arrogant character, I actually rate his little brother higher than him!

If Lennon doesn't make the squad it will totally and utterly be beyond me, a guy like him, and at his age is lethal.

I think Sven more or less has his squad picked, and I can see some upset people to be honest, he's a man with no ball's.

center mid gerrard, lampard, carrick, nolan

strikers, rooney, crouch, bent, defoe and ashton if fit

i cant belive no1 even seen it coming to be honest, the whole contry has been saying that Rooney will bring it home for us, only i though it was going to be Terry that munched himand put him out of the cup.
And i would go so far as to say that i would rather have a half fit rooney than some of the above mentioned candidates to play up front.
Rooney is also a bit younger than Becks and Owen were when they suffered the same injury.....hopefully he can heal quicker.
