In two similar cars, driven in similar ways and doing the same ammount of miles per year... Which type of engine would probably last longer? typically I mean...
For example, Mr Smith owns a 330Ci E46 BMW. He does about 15,000 miles a year, 10,000 of which are around town (commuting, dropping kids off, etc) and 5,000 are spent taking the car out for blasts around country lanes and just pleasure driving.
Mr Jones owns a 330 TDCi E46 Beemer. He also does about 15,000 miles a year, 10,000 of which are around town (commuting, dropping kids off, etc) and 5,000 are spent taking the car out for blasts around country lanes and just pleasure driving.
Typically, which engine would probably last longer? Which engine would begin to significantly wear sooner, and which would be the more expensive to maintain?

I'd say it would have alot to do with which engine is revved nearer it's redline - so in your scenarios during the time when the driver is out for a blast it will depend how much they're revving the engine.
I'd say the diesel as it naturally has lower rpms even when revved - so the wear should be less.
I'm no mechanic though, theoretical or otherwise so I could be completely wrong!

I dunno the models, I just know they make both diesel and petrol 330 Beemers lol....
Andy - get what you are saying about redlining, so lets say for arguments sakem they both redline as much as each other when out for a thrashing - ie, each gear taken to the limit then changed...
