£500 max ideally, something that I can just bomb around town, not worry about it getting dinged in a car park etc...

Fiesta/Corsa etc not really my thing as a bit too cramped inside, however was looking at Rover 200s (1996 on) as they seem cheap to buy and run, but reliability seems sketchy. Punto was also recommended...

Anybody an advice/furthur recommendations?

Despite your apparent lack of enthusiasm for a Fiesta, that's what I'd get every time. Cheap, reliable, easy to fix, easy to get bits for, nice to drive. As for cramped - hmmm..........how does having a complete RST minus engine, box and tailgate in the back of a 4 door G plate Fiesta sound ?

No chance a Punto, Italian junk and as for a Rover Get an old VW

doubt you'll get a 96 on rover 200 for that amount mate,

get a pre 96 214, really good cars for the money, 16v twin cam and surprisingly nippy for a 1.4. pre 96 200's dont suffer from head gaskets as much either.

Theres loads in my Autotrader at the moment for between £400-£600 with lowish mileage, thats what got me thinking bout them and they are out there
