£5k. Need a 'toy'
Hello all.
I'm after a wee something as a second car with a budget of £5k.
Initial thoughts are:
Saff Cossie - No Biased
Classic Impreza
Supra
Mitsi GTO TT
As you may have guessed, it has to be turbo.

It would be out of the Cossie and the Scooby from that list.......
Cossie everytime
Just remember to hold some money back so that if anything does go wrong you can sort it.
Also if you get a Cossie...get it set-up as soon as you have it to make sure the fueling ect is ok

TBH mate, the Impeza engine is NORT a strong point at all
For the money you have you should be able to get a recently rebuilt Cossie which would be good for alot of miles--60k plus if not thrashed

power,parts,fault finding ,cossie everytime
just had the guys at ava (glasgow) play with my cossie today and top stuff from them ,cured my fueling side of things all over and car runs better than ever than it has done ,missfire at top end has gone and drives nicer low down at town speeds aswell
even better i will have less trips to buy optimax now

If you get one, change all the sensors and give it a GOOD service, the service it every 3-4k mile and you will be fine mate

I'm favouring the cossy.
WRT to AVA, i've heard some right horror stories about em. But then you only hear the bad ones eh.
TIFF. When you say sensors, what exactly should be changed, you talking lambda and AFM etc?
I take it if i took the car to AVA for example and said 'change all the sensors', they would know what i'm on about?
And thats another worry i have, what if i rolling road it and the thing throws a rod?
Is it a bit of a falacy that jap cars are more reliable?

ive had about 6/7 subarus,3 gto twin turbos, god knows how many cossies.
not had supra.
subarus are ok,but really nothing special and expensive when they go wrong.
gto not as quick as you would think, and soooooooooo expensive for parts
cossie-never had one let go on me and cheaper to repair than the others and much more tuneable.
has to be a cossie-slightly biased as i sell them also!!!!
but i also drive one
e30 m3 good car
nissan pulsar gtir dont touch with barge pole
lancia integrale unreliable
all my opinion only

As someone said Subarus aren't as 'solid' engine wise.I have a WRX MY03 and the big end on number 4 has failed!! It had only done 34K They can be reliable but mine was originally owned by Subaru UK LTD and was Prodrives development car for the the PPP (Prodrive Performance Pack) guess it had a hard life I get mine back next weekend with a fully rebuilt engine.New crank, competition big end bearings, new mains, fully balanced rods, fresh bores, oversize new pistons/rings, fully overhauled/cleaned heads, all genuine Subaru parts.Need to run it in for 1000 miles also.
Cossies have a solid crank/bottom end, whereas the Subaru can have big end failure due to det alone!! As said though, if set up correctly they can be very very reliable but it's the same with the cossie.

If its a second car, are you planning on doing Track Days? If so, then £5K will get you a tidy Pug GTI or similar.
If you must have a turbo theres 200sx's to consider. E36 M3s are near that price range now as well.
What exactly do you want out of this "toy" ?
errr No.

Now now. Play nice.
I may do some track days, but to be fait this is going to be something for me to literally play with up to and below the legal limit (ahem). you know what i mean.
I think i'm gonna stick with the cossy. I'll keep you posted.

I doubt a modern Supra Turbo can be had for £5k, they are holding their money quite well. EVO 6s are fetching between £10k-£15k at the moment. A very tidy Saph (2WD) is probably you best bet. I had 3 inthe space of 3 years and apart from a couple of fooked clutches, I had no major problems. Cossies are very easy to work on, I repaired every problem I had and went from stage 1 to stage 3 in a weekend including uprating the head gasket. The only thing I had to do was to visit Harvey Gibbs to make sure I had set it up right, and it was good. I hammered the hell out of that thing with about 350bhp on tap and no problems.
