Could be. My rev counter on my 4x4 started playing up reading 4000rpm while engine was on idle then not climbing when rising through rev range. car also started to miss on hard acceleration and full bost so changed the coil and everything seems fine now. I have heard of the actual rev counter packing up on cossies though.

theres only 2 inputs and a ground, the +ve and -ve are simple to trace, black/yellow is +ve if i remember rightly, brown will no doubt be brown, the signal input from the coil is the green cable second in from left here....

if saph clocks aint got the same loom then you'll have to strip the clocks to see whats what, i understood it so it aint rocket science

suggest you try breaking into the signal feed from the coil about an inch in from the clock multiplug and running it to the coil, or if you know how (i didnt) measure the resistance of that wire to see if theres a break etc

...which makes it sound like a lose connection/semi broken wire
