its ex graham goode car, the one he used in btcc for 88 season and when was redone and used by sean walker for 89 season in these colours.






has some interesting history with damon hill driving at donnington round with walker they came 4th in the 1hr two driver race.

 

will take a fair bit of work to look as good again,

but should have it done a a few months.

booked for body shop in two weeks,

not got a price or time scale of them yet

same colours and graphics, which does not look easy but with effert it can be done,

with doing this car and then looking forword to my 3hr snetterton race next month in the merc that should blow some cobwebs off. should keep me busy.

 

H14 is the roll bar that needs to be fitted to your car this was a recal back in 1987 .All rs500's have the h14 roll bar as standard .The h14 roll bar is also standard fittment to all 2wd sapphires.

 

Steve Scott mention this at Central Day, said people used to fit Ganada ones to give more camber so its a possability yes. Will have to check the part numbers.

 

Really?? My mates mint 36k miles RS500 has a H13 roll bar. Its a late build as well No. 492.

God this is hard work
Went to pick up new arms yesterday, one was silver with a nylock nut on the other was black with a castle nut and split pin. Said I wanted a matching pair so they said fair enough come back tomorrow.

So went back today and they had got two black ones with nylock nuts on. Had a quick look at them and they seemed ok. Got them home had a better look at them....er...hang on...stand them on end next to each other........one is longer that the other Fooks sake! Raced back down before they closed left the longer one there and they trying to source another one for tomorrow.

because it was unlucky?

for that matter, how many different types of arb are there and how would you tell them apart?
other than the thickness and possibly the lengt of thread on the ends that is?

Right, the new arms are on fully poly bushed as are the anti roll bar brackets. Also fitted new top mounts as well. The wheels are further under the arch with a bit less camber and........................................
It still rubs Its only a bit though and very occasionally. Changing the tyre to a 205 would probably cure it completely but i'll see how it goes after driving it a bit more.

no, seeing as everything is now chips fault

back in the real world though, how have they affected the handling? the track is obviously going to be narrower by that much so have you seen the top of the wheels pointing in or were they that far out in the first place?

 

With the old wrong arms on the bottom of the wheel was too far out giving it more camber. The new correct arms have brought the wheels in a bit, as you say narrowing the track. Steering feels better, smoother and the car feels more stable. Obviously the polybushes and new top mounts have made a difference though.

 

how long were the "wrong" arms and how long are the "right" arms?

don't want to be going to the shops to get a tca for the granada and then find out it's the wrong one or we'll all be doing this again

 

Thats how I first discovered they were different. Im not sure if the longer one is a Granada one, havent checked the part number yet.

I didn't know the rollbar was a recall???
I was working at a ford dealership at this time and we did change a few but this was only when customers complained about the twitchy handling and the way the 3dr would try to change lanes at speed.
Ford also recomended shimming the rollbar to increase castor as this was all the new bar did. The saph had more castor angle. (increase castor= move the wheel forward more in the arch)

 

Hmmm looking at those pics I think I have the longer arm on mine too.. So the part number should be H14?

But if the new arms are shorter surely that would push the top of the wheel out of the arch as there is now less camber?

Mine does catch at times at the top of the arch and I don’t want to make it worse by changing them.

H14 is the Saph rollbar number. I have the part numbers for the correct and wrong arms if you want to check them against yours?

Imagine looking head on at the front of the car.
Diagram A shows the longer track control arm pushing the wheel out giving it a lot of camber.
Diagram B shows the shorter track control arm pulling the wheel in under the arch giving it less camber. Hope that makes sense!

 

This all started with a conversion to ABS...
Which followed with sapphire cossy calipers and discs..
The parts on my3dr are 838830798A IAF34 and 175 mm per above measurement, another set thrown in with some gear look like short ones, and I have a set of sapphire hubs. I would have been happy with my original setup but there is no ABS sensor on there... If I could convert the hub I would be happy but I think it is not possible... now I have a bunch of mis matched parts...
I am gonna post this to the other item as well...
What should I do, I think I have to get a set of 3dr hubs with ABS mounting point... finding them at a reasonable price is gonna be hard...
Any ideas.
