Do you push and pull?
Am studying for my advanced driving test at the moment. After the inital shock of realising I have to drive a TRAFFIC COPPER about so he can diss the cos and my driving, I also realised it won't be the piece of pee I expected it to be.
My main, and incomprehensible problem is I do not steer by push and pull. Which you have to do to pass. I have been trying, but I always slip into bad habits.
So who does and who doesn't?
The worst bloody thing is that my 55 year old mum is taking her driving test in a few weeks.. and the cow pushes and pulls like there's no tomorrow. Smug B*atch

If it's such a crap way of driving though, why do you HAVE to do it to pass!?
but rally drivers have next to no turns lock to lock,if thats what theyre telling you ask how they get round tight corners (hint:handbrake on!)
so theyre talking shite!it takes soooooo much longer to manouver

With a 2.2 quick rack on the RST sometimes to turn the steering wheel at low speed you have no choice but to do this
Also with the quick rack you HAVE to drive with both hands on the steering wheel

Davva - but how much practise!? lol
Sassy - sounds like me with left foot braking.. can't do it without nutting the windscreen
Usual Suspect - I may ask why, but thems is the rules. Gotta push pull to pass
Andreas - That's exactly it. Tis to stop you from letting go of the wheels and thus max control (allegedly). Do feel like a learner doing it though (which I guess I am!)
Andy - sounds perfect.. can I have a lend

Tis 86 quid I think. It's the Institute Of Advanced Motorists (IAM). You pays your money, they send you a book, then you contact a local 'trainer' that has passed the test and they run you through it til you can handle the plod in your car.. which is gonna be so odd?!
You have to push & pull because the DSA feel's that it's alot safer for you to drive with both hands on the steering wheel or using both hands hence giving you more control over the steering.
I never used to bother with it but since i've been a driving instructor i tend to do it most of the time (even in the evo)
But it does work well if you get it right
If your having difficulty getting the hang of it use a biro, the biro represents the steering wheel & you just basically pass the biro from one hand to the other in a way as if your steering the wheel
(that actually makes no sense unless you see it demonstrated)
If i see you at central day i'll demonstrate it to you - it does work as i've used this technique with some of my students who aint got a clue when it come to push pull.

More material for you lot to take the piss with
PMSL I can see it now chattin to Cola while she does "her thing" with her Biro !
My old man teaches the old bill Class 1 driving as he was Traffic for a stoopid long time !
Just hope you dont have to do the runnin comentary ! LOL Gives you alot of handy hints & tips while your drivin tho, like the meetin point of kerbs n stuff !
Push/pull is alledgly safer as you don't cross your arms - me pops always said if something happend just at that point where you had your hands crossed, your steerin would be limited.
Good luck tho babe,
It's not that bad ! Honest

How did you and your dad ever get on?! lol
I hope it's not that bad.. but i just can't seem to stick with it long term. As soon as someone pulls out on me or summat I am away.. no push pull required!

Hardly ever, if at all - I'm going to try to remember to deliberately have a go when driving home tonight, I'm terrible for one handed driving

i get the biro thing aj lol
i tend to push pull the majorit of the time after seeing that most rally drivers do it i had a go and took to it pretty well and with out having power steering on the rst it kinda makes things that little easier

I did the advance driving course back in 2000, after you have the hour long test with the traffic officer you can book yourself in to an extra skid pan lesson, I did this at stoke on a police skid pan and was told not to push pull as it to slow! So after months of forcing myself to push pull drive all the time passed the test and it was out the window. Got a 2 turn quick rack now on my car so hardly any need to let go of the steering wheel, just like Sage Rally at the arcades
Do they still say you cant overlap? I.e you cant brake, turn and change gear at the same time?

What is it now - Information then Position then Speed then Gear then.. oh I dunno.. I'm still struggling with push pull lol
Push and pull does work well once you get used to it and you can drive fast and safely using this method. IIRC Roadcraft says you must use push and pull but can cross over the hands for a very tight bend.

Good luck on the test!
Hey hey hunny, i is all good - gettin another Cossie in next couple week ! Mwah ha ha
It's all about vision, then you got the information to respond. Always drive as fast, so you can stop within the distance you can see ! LOL That stuck in me head !
Me & pops got on cool, as soon as i did somethin wrong I jus got a slap round back of head init ! LOL
Only person to eva leave me down this country lane i know when i was in me cossie (4wd at time) & he was in a 1 litre mini ! Oh my dayz, still don't live that down !
The other thing he did was put his bunch of keys on the dash & said to me, he shouldn't really hear them movin around ! Well he didn't really cos they flew off the dash & hit him in the chest !
He drove (me cossie) and they never moved ! We weren't hangin round either !

The way you are discribing the teaching is exactly the way you are taught to drive when in a HGV of all classes.
Just imagine what it is like to get a 45foot wagon round a very tight bend with a line of traffic on the other side of the road
That was all like you have discribed cola, imformation, position, speed blah blah blah......You will get used to it very quickly...
How long are the lessons you have been doing?
When i was training for hgv it was 8.5 hours a day for a whole week then a 2 hour test at the end....
