Default Gauges....helping your engine stay safe...?

I remember reading a while back that Stu luckily avoided meltdown on his cossie thanks to a warning light coming on on one of his gauges or similar....but i cant seem to find the post...

am basically wondering will the likes of a AFR, fuel pressure and EGT gauge help you keep your engine safe from fuelling problems and meltdown?

also read that Tim noticed something dodgy about his car and luckily caught the problem early to aviod meltdown...

reason im asking is im building an engine that i would rather not have melt down or blow especially if i can detect something early enough

A gague won't actually 'stop' anything from happening, or keep it operating safe, but Im sure you know that.

Its always a comfort to know whats actually happening, but its good to look out of the front window too and actually see where your going

yes tony know that but what im getting at is say the fuel pump packed up for some reason...the fuel pressure guage and other gauges will pick it up and alert u NOT to put ur foot down and pull over before major damage is done...

im sure stu actually said that he had his hooked up to a light that turns on when pressure is below a certain point...just wondering how this was done

If your pump packs up then no amount of putting your foot down will get you anywhere lol

Some gagues have the facility to operate an external warning light / buzzer built in.

I think a voltmeter is also a good gauge to have. My alt' died last year whilst out on the road which was making the car run leaner and leaner. Luckly the car was hooked up to karl's mapping gear and warning indications where going off everywhere...... otherwise it would have been bye bye engine.
