Default DVD burning question...

Can you burn more than 2hrs onto a 4.7gb DVD?

I have an MPEG file that is 2hrs 24mins long and I am about to convert it to DVD file format so as to burn as a DVD video - but can you do more than 2hrs onto a DVD?

Is it? Cool!

Then I shall convert it and hopefully it will be less than 4.7gb (if not, DVD Shrink should be able to resize it)

Yeah, worked fine. Converted the MPEG to DVD files and it came out at 3.92gb, so just burned it directly to DVD-R using Nero, and it is now playing in my home DVD player

Check your home player........you may not have to convert the MPEG file in to BUP/Vob files ( DVD compliant files ) in order to play the disc........re-encoding reduces the quality of the end product, so if you dont have to do it, dont....

Basically what im saying is, my pioneer plays everything, MPEG, Xvid, S/VCD's etc.... So i dont need to waste time converting all my files.

The video is 2hrs 24mins long, so it won't fit on a "video CD" (using a CD-R), plus it's 1.3gb anyway, with a CD-R only being 700mb, and Nero will only burn DVD (VOB/VTS/BUP) files to a DVD-R if I click "make DVD Video disc".....

Lol, you dont need to burn svcd/vcd files on to a cd..........you can extract the core avi file using something like isobuster, and then burn the resulting MPEG/MPEG2/MPEG4 file on to a dvd.......

And if your using NERO, open nero burning rom, then when it says " new compilation " select DVD-Rom (iso) then right click the window and add teh files....Along the bottom will be the standard slide bar showing how much of the dvd space is being filled by your file.....Then burn as normal.

All this will be a waste of a disc though if your dvd player wont play non compliant dvd discs.....

Do you burn the MPEG file onto a DVD by making a "data disc", cos in Nero, if I go to "Make DVD Video Disc" and go looking for an MPEG it won't find any - as it only lets me burn DVD compliant files to a DVD......

My DVD player does play non-DVD-compliant files, as I have maked video cd's with MPEGs and WMVs before now......

No, no, dont burn it as a data disc.......it needs to be burnt as an iso disc.

As said it depends on the DVD player, if the player plays data discs with MP3/AVI/DIVX/MPG/WMV, then there no need to convert at all.

Just burn the files < 4,7GB to a "Data-disc"(DVD).

Nah, don't think the DVD will read a "data disc" tho... I'm pretty sure it don't read data CD's with MPG files on em....

I'll just carry on converting to DVD files for films too big for Video CD's I reckon...

At the end of the day, if it's a film or something I really like, I'll buy it on DVD anyway, to get the full features and 5.1 sound, if it ain't, then I can live with slightly grainy picture and normal stereo sound...

This one, for example, is footage of Pink Floyd in concert at Earls Court in 1994. It's been recorded from a braodcast on Jap satellite tv as an MPEG, probably from a video anyway....

The DVD edition is due for release in Sept this year, and I will defintely be getting that, so this is just a stop gap in the mean time
