Default Cossie brakes on a 1.1 Fiesta

I have dared suggest on another forumn that the fitment of Cossie 4x4 brakes on a 1.1 Fiesta is over the top

I suggested XR2i kit as it's cheap readily available and is good enough to stop 105bhp so a 4.5bhp car should be no problem. Apparently though XR2i brakes will be no good as they will fade and are crap.

It's an 1100cc Fiesta FFS not a 2.1 Zetec Turbo monster

It seems my actual experience of doing stuff is far overshadowed by his thoughts about the subject with no experience at all.

It's like being at fooking school arguing with the thick kid

why is it over the top? You never know when your going to need to rely on good brakes. Just because he's driving a low power fiesta doesnt mean someone isnt going to pull out infront of him and cause him to stamp on the brakes.

A 1.1 will still do 80-90 mph the same as a 2.1 turbo fiesta and something might happen at that speed where more powerful brakes would help slow the car down.

Oh and who to say he isnt fitting big brakes now and the next mod after that is a more powerful engine? Getting better brakes 1st is the smart way of modding a car isnt it ???

That was exactly my thoughts. Yeah, its obviously over the top. But its not like it has any real downsides except cost (that I can think of), and if he can afford it, more power to his elbow.

The lad wants something a bit better than he has on a 1.1 he has made no mention of big engine conversions. The XR kit will stop him fine from 80mph. I used stock stoppers on my old 2i on track from over 100 and they didn't start to fade out until a few stops were done.

The budget of doing the conversion and then mantaining it once done is daft

My experience of idiots is this, they're going to do it anyway so instead of talking them out of it, try and profit from it

Who's got a set of cossie brakes I can buy cheap and sell to that dude with the 1.1?

so by your own admission its possible they could fade after hard braking. Maybe he wants to do the job right the 1st time so not to have to re do it again later

Why would does cossie brakes cost more to maintain than XR2i brakes ? If anything they would be cheaper to maintain as they arent being worked as hard and less likely to warp

Have you seen the cost of Cossie 4x4 discs and pads?

Even driving my old 2i like an animal I never warped the discs

In a 1.1 by time you've hit the ancors from 80mph and got your speed back up that far again you'll have travelled across 2 counties

Still think having better brakes than the power you make is a smart move

as the title says i have a 1.1 with 195/45/15 tyres on it, currently it has the standard discs and my brakeing is sh!* as a result (well i think its the tyres fault, it blead clean and the pads are fine)

so my question is what discs and calipers can i use to improve my brakeing, ideally im looking for somthing that will just bolt right on, so im thinking either standard frst/xr2i or 1.6 focus discs and calipers, as its only a 1.1 im not going to need huge brakeing power so i think these will be ok provided they fit.

also will i need a new master cylinder or is my current one fine

thanks
By his own admission he doesnt need/want big discs so your suggestion should have been spot on

I agree completely but there's no need to go silly with it.

Actually, in that quote he seems to be going towards your suggestion, where did the Cossie brake idea come from?

Im not really seeing why you would unless you were after an engine transplant later. I mean, sure, there will be situations where Cossie brakes would stop you and 2i ones wouldnt, but youre about as likely to end up in that situation as you are to win the lottery really. It would make more sense if you were going to get some extra power, as you would have only had to uprate the brakes once rather than twice.

He also said after a few stops.

By the time the 1.1 is back up to speed the brakes will cool.

Think of all that extra unsprung weight being dragged around... nice

Probably more for the cosmetic effect of looking vaguely sensible behind 18" alloys.
