Default compression testing?

can a compression test be done with the engine cold because ive always letthe engine warm up, remove plugs, insert tester into plug hole and turn over? the only problem is this time is that i cant start my engine to do this but with the oil not thinning outthis causes a problem? is there another method i can use?
