Default WE'RE ON THE WAY!! Ring Countdown - NO Days to Go!!!

LATEST UPDATES AND PICS ON PAGE 3

Hi all,

After the post about who has what to do for the Ring I thought I'd post my progress seeing as I'm prob the furthest behind - given that I have no engine

I'll post pics up and list the work I get done on a day by day basis - starting here -

Wednesday 29th March - 12:20AM

Current job list:

Get engine bits together
Build engine
Install engine
Fit clutch
Fit Group A fuel pump
Install a working stereo system
Run in engine
Map engine
Sort RAC Europe cover
Sort Insurance cover
Get foreign coins

Pics of the current state of play:

The car minus it's motor

And the bits I've gathered together so far - literally eveything that can be powder coated has been powdercoated.

The spec for the Ring will be mild - aiming for 370 bhp for (relative) reliability, prior to going down the 500+bhp route with a GT30 / GT35 and some bigger injectors on this same engine.

Spec:
Brand new 200 Motorsport Block
2400 Motorsport Stainless inlet plenum - ready for big power conversion
CHD fully worked Cylinder head (everything that can be done, and everything new)
CHD modified inlet manifold
Cosworth 7.2:1 Pistons with valve cutouts
New standard grind crank
Original conrods, ARP conrod bolts
2wd Exhaust manifold (with spare ready for External wastegate conversion)
Turbo Technics T34 .55 running 27-28psi
2400 Motorsport rosejointed turbo hanger/damper
Cometic gaskets throughout
Alcon 6 paddle clutch and heavy duty cover (Thanks Mike Rainbird )
Grey injectors
Group A fuel pump
L8 ECU, currently running off the shelf chip, hopefully to be live mapped

Car spec to follow tomorrow. More pics and updates to follow every day.

Will it be ready on time?
Odds on it won't be, but watch this space to see how I get on...

Cheers
Simon

Wednesday 29th March - 23:40

Progress update -

Today I cleaned some parts

Nah, did a bit more = took block and pistons, flywheel, rods and crank for machining (lightening / balancing etc).

Ordered a few more bits I'd forgotten about (hoses mainly)

Now I'm really screwed...14 days to go.... tick tock tick tock

14 days to do all that and hold down a full time day job..........sounds well dicey to me. You'll be getting a taxi there at this rate!

Got a spare Pug 205 Mi16 if needed, but that's a last resort really - wanna get the Cossie there somehow or other (prob will still be building it on the ferry over there!)

Going to work everynight from 7pm (when I finish work) till 11:30 to get it done.

Shame I've got to be up in 4 hours for another day's graft - If I worked full time on the Cossie it'd be done in no time.

More real progress tomorrow I hope once I get the block back...

Thursday 30th March / Friday 31st March 00:30

Jobs achieved today:

Block and moving parts back from engine machining place - wallet Ł270 lighter!

Ordered loads more Roose hoses to replace tired Samcos and the odd black hose - Ł140 lighter wallet

My mechanic housemate Phill2400 has put the crank and mains into the block - looks good already

Also tried to work out where all these bolts and bits come from... going to have soooo much left over afterwards (as per normal!)

Still screwed....

Sunday 2nd April / Monday 3rd April 00:48

Bit more progress at last!

Engine is now in the car.

Feels like a big hurdle overcome - all the parts all over the place made me think this would never be done, but now it's all together and sat in the bay I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Just waiting on the Roose hoses and a few more gaskets and then the top end can go in - that's tomorrows/tonights (Monday night's) plan.

Pics of things so far:

The engine and box just before lifting into place

The engine bolted into place - lot of work still to do, but thank god it's in there

Phill (my housemate and YB building genius) doing up the gear box bolts

Still got to bolt up head, tanks, hoses, rad, cooler, inlet / exhaust manifolds, turbo, fit new loom, fit all the 2400 Motorsport shiny bling bits (Swedish style plenum, throttle bracket, heatshield, fuel rail cover, rad cover etc etc) , time it up, and start it up! Going to try and get this lot done on Monday night and Tuesday, as have a Fast Ford shoot at the Somerset RSOC meet on Weds - would love to have the car running in by then.

Going to do 1000 or so miles running in, then hopefully get it mapped in time for a bit more running / testing before the ring trip in just 10 days!

If there's time I'm also planning on getting it corner weighted and some adjustable TCAs on it....

Still not even sure if it will start though so not going to get too carried away yet! Still got to do my full time job, which means I'm up in 3 hours 40 mins time!!!

More updates as and when...

Simon

Monday 3rd April / Tuesday 4th April 00:53

Cheers all for the positive encouragement - just what I need at the mo.

Not so much progress to report today. Phill hooked up the anti roll bar, front suspension / driveshafts etc, prop shaft onto the box, all engine pulleys. He also assembled the turbo and alternator (both stripped and refurbed, plus powder coated.)

I went to work, came home after Phill had left for his late shift, and then did feck all

Well I did manage to clean the cooler and rad, fitted the intercooler, taped up any bare / untidy cables, drunk some tea, prepped the suspension turret area and painted them body colour (sort of, see below).

Basically sounds like we did bugger all, but it's hard work fitting this stuff around 10 hour shifts and doing all the other house stuff like shopping, cooking eating etc. Alarm goes off everyday at 4:40am, and I get on the Net for a browse and to update this just before bed at 1am! Going to need the 5 days at the Ring to catch up on

Hopefully more progress tomorrow as we hope the Roose hoses turn up and we can get the head on and all the Black bling installed.

Thinking maybe the car won't be ready for Wednesdays Fast Ford photo shoot Here's hoping for a productive day tomorrow.

See you in 24 hours!
Simon

Prepping the wing for painting - it was done in 5 mins flat, and looks like it!

Interwarmer cleaned and fitted - not much but it's one less thing to do before the Ring, and one less item to trip over in the house

Black is the new bling, or something like that. Has all my old crappy Forge tanks powder coated black for a change. Got fed up of permanently polishing the aluminium, only for it to get buggered any time the bay got wet

Alternator in the black and silver theme that will follow all over the bay. As time and money allow all pipes and fittings will be matching black and silver Aeroquip and will be connected to a whole load of 2400 Motorsport Stainless steel tanks which should set the black bits off a treat.

Possibly my biggest cock up with the car so far - the bloke who does the powder coating said he had a 'special' high temp powder coat great for exhausts. So he did my turbo and manifold - shown below.

I asked him for a spec sheet to see how good it was - MAX TEMP 400 degrees C

Have now fitted a Foam and Powder fire extinghuisher in the car - I predict a fire!

Once the GT30, external waste gate, aeroquip and stainless tanks are all I hope it'll be looking pretty trick in there - for now though I'll be happy just to see a few more engine bits sat in there regardless of how they look.

Off to get some zzzzzzzzzzs
cheers for reading

This is some herculean effort. I know what it feels like, so I hope it all goes to plan.

BTW, what is 2400 Motorsport?

As SiB wont be around until later this evening (probably midnight after the next session of re-building the cosruff)......

2400 Motorsport are manufacturers of Stainless Steel bling items (anything you can think of in your engine bay basically, including Sweedish Plenums, heat shields etc). I believe a website will be coming soon.......

Its good stuff to say the least

PMSL at Doug's Newspaper edit - anyone who knows Sketch will prob also know about his 5 year engine rebuild project. Very witty!

I love the internet - I don't even need to look in the garage to see what work's been done in my absence!

Many thanks Doug and Phill - it's really looking good. Those green injectors are being junked right away though - I think they were in place to dummy test the fuel rail fittings on the Swedish style plenum.

I'm off shopping for more bits for the car, then stick on some more odd and sods to try and help a smidge (don't want to overdo it or ruin Phil's enjoyment of the work! )

Better go do some spannering, more pics later

Hi Nick, and anyone else who might know -

What will / might happen when the powder coating gets properly hot (like turbo exhaust manifolds do? Powder coater man said it would turn to powder / dust and flake off at worst.

He doesn't think it will burn

I think I'm going to find out soon....
