can they get locked from use like a mobile phone?

I thought they could, there was a few tom tom's floating about just before christmas that had "fallen off the back of a lorry" so to speak and we were told they would be usless if bought because they will just be locked?

Nope

All a sat nav does is collect its position from the GPS sat network which it gets FREE

Then the map says this is where you are

IIRC it sends NO info anywhere so how could they lock it ??? Unless they have there own sattelite that sends a lock code to it but this i very much doubt

The only thing they could do is lock the key codes that unlock maps for you when you register online thats all

Not sure, as said GPS isn't usually locked as such, though the US Mil can very easily turn off public access to the GPS system....(they don't often, but do move it about a bit and change the accuracys, especially in more volatile regions).

Tomtom MAY have a locking facility built into the software....I know if you use Traffic Updates etc, it will connect to Tomtom's servers via your mobile phone (if using a PDA etc), so it could be locked that way.....wouldn't be "locked" if they didn't connect for an update though.
