Default Hi powered Cosworths

Ok...so we are now seeing some SERIOUSLY powerful cars coming out...A 400bhp Cossie is scary enuff let alone the old 500bhp beasts...now its getting to 700bhp Cossies on the ROAD...and i may add is within a lot of peoples reach...450bhp plus is certainly within anyones reach!!!!(Money wise)

Now i have a problem...responsibility...yes a long word for me..LOL...BUT i am concererned that these cats with 500bhp plus really shouldnt be owning them....now i not talking about people like me who KNOWS i cant handle big power...i like to have big power and feel a bit of straight line g-force....great fun IMO.

On the other scale we have people owning these cars..as much as 700bhp i am led to beleive who actually DO drive them to there limits by all accounts...and i say this now...i DONT beleive you are in full control..the reason being even a Group B rally driver said that there cars were so fast you couldnt have enuff reaction to control them......Now we getting road going Group B powered cars being used by wannabe Allens.

Set aside your hatred for me and sit and think about it sensibly...are cars getting TOO fast now and are we gonna be mourning someone in the near future?I really hope not.

Phil at the end of the day its supply and demand

If a tuner can supply 700HP then people will demand it

Who are you or anybody else for that matter to say what people can and cant drive

If a 700bhp Cosworth is fast then a 1000+bhp Skyline is worse, maybe you should be asking this on the Skyline website!

I think the guy means....that the most people aren't cappable enough to drive such monsters. Maybe he means also...what's the point having such bhp trough the rear wheels if you can't controle the car properly.

after all we aren't all experienced group B rally drivers.

Hi..Phil..i didnt mention Skylines as the whole point of this post was the fact that Hi powered Cossies are within much reach due to cost.

I am not saying you CANT drive it or have it Deano.......i am trying to make a point by saying at what stage will a car just become too quick for human reactions...the Group B were apparently that..these cars Cossies are now as quick if not quicker.

Obviously not when you drive a yellow car named after a fruit no one else could decide that for you

I also think ima has a good point alot of these owners will not be able to control these beasts at full chat even the best drivers crash ie the Reyland Crash ie Steve Scott crashed his rally car ie all the accidents in F1 etc Human error is inevitable eventually even for nomal people in normal cars

Phil ,

What about Bikes then

None of us everyday Riders have even a 1/4 of the skill or reaction Valentino Rossi has but that doesnt stop us buying the next fastest bike out there , and what about those that fit Nitrous and Turbos to bikes ?

Deano, I dont think phil is trying to say who can and who cant drive a particular car. Think he is just pointing out the fact that 500 bhp cars which were mental are now becoming 600 - 700 bhp and can paople really use this sort of power on the road sensibly, without becoming a danger to themselves or others.

Deano..road deaths on motorbikes have gone up dramatically though!!!!

BUT remember i think Motorbikes do have a BHP limit now dont they????

Like Germany 155mph limited...Japan 112mph limited with 280bhp limit.

I know what Phils trying to say but since the power output of a car isnt regulated ........ YET

No of course you cant use 700HP sensibly , when can you ever ?

Even on a trackday a skilled drive couldnt use that much power all of the time

Its going to be one of those things Im afraid

As time goes by Manufacturers always want to be the most powerful / fastest , same goes for bikes too

And until someone steps in and says enough is enough theres not much anyone can do about it

Er NO

Road Bikes now are pushing out over 180BHP

I remember when youd only get that after a turbo or Nitrous kit

Ima does indeed have point. At no point do i think he said what people can and cant drive I just think its concern over high powered machines in inexperienced hands.

Ive dont a lot of research on group B rally cars - The cars where so fast that the drivers had to drive two corners in advance if that makes sense - a lot of drivers where phsyically mullered after each stage.

There have also been many fatal accidents on group B rally that ive been unfortunate enough to see footage off and its not pretty (anyone who has seen the video of the white rs200 striking the tree will know just how fast these cars where)

Me personally im a crap driver when it comes to handling power - i got my 16vi 2i and its enough for me - god help me when i get my zetec turbo!

the reason that some german car makers have voluntarily 'officially limited' their cars speeds to 155mph (250 kph actually) is to appease enviromental groups - nothing to do with safety.

and porsche do not do it

when is 700 bhp too much? in first gear certainly, but in a tall 5th gear on a good road? not really.

and don't forget that group b rally cars were not running on proper smooth tarmac most of the time (as if british roads are good smooth tarmac anymore ). tyre technology has also improved dramatically since then.

power is nothing without control.

LMFAO

Phil the Very first R1s were knocking out that much back in 98

Now they have about 160HP , Kwak ZX10s and HYABUSA`s have even more

I got a Video on group B where Walter Raul basically says the cars are to fast for the drivers imagine 650-700bhp down a single lane road with lots of people in the way and in those days they had serious spectator problems

Its not for you to decide what is too fast and what is not.

Death cures stupid, so the problem will take care of itself as far as weeding out those who can afford that kind of power, but not hang onto it.

funny looking motorbike you got there phil

i do to an extent agree.

however i do not think people should be told what they can and cannot do with regards to these things...

whiclst i wouldnt want to be on the same peice of road with a 17year old whos just passed his test hooning around ina 2000bhp RWD dragster i do not think that there should be laws STOPPING that same 17 year old from doing so if he wishes... (catch22 )

maybe if there was a similar thing with bike licences as car licences (ie you only allowed slow ones up till certain age then you have a test etc. etc. (altho i know direct access defeats the object)

maybe you need a special part of your licence to drive anything with 200+bhp then 300+bhp etc. etc. altho the car manufacturers would go mental and attempt to block sucha scheme, i think that in the long run it would be beneficial to the safety of all road users.

however in all fairness how many road deaths (% wise) are caused each year by drivers who killed someone due to them not being able to control a powerful car? i'm sure its quite a low figure, so surely any ares for concentration when it comes to road safety shold be focuses on the biggest killers on the road (ie NOT speed )

rant over

You could have the most experienced driver in the world, and they could still fuck up, or something break, so accidents will always happen.

We should focus on driver education.

What has it got to do with just Cosworths tho ( look at title of thread)?

You've been able to get similar/more power from other cars for a few years.

If you've done so much research, you'll know that most rally drivers drive three corners ahead in most cases, especially in places like Monte Carlo.

Christ, even in the 205 challenge, we drove 1 to 2 corners ahead at nearly all times.

Do you know exactly how many deaths there were in Group B then?

st3v3 i agree 100%

i think driver education SERIOUSLY needs looking at

even if only to avoid problems like congestion etc. etc.

IMHO lane discipline alone is one of the major causes for congestion on the motorway so many times ive been sat on a 4lane stretch of the M25 with NOBODY in the 2 left lanes and a big Q of traffic sitting in the fast lane

i wouldnt mind, but i want to go FASTER than everyone else so if you moved over a lane or two i could

sorry rant over... lol

Phil,

Aside from all that, I think you might have a valid point.

Driver skill outweighs bhp in nearly all cases as far as making a quick car on track for example ( to a point).

I agree with you as well that most people couldn't use 60% of their huge bhp figures in extracting the most amount of speed out of the car.
