Neccesity for a rear anti roll bar on a 3dr cossie????

Default Neccesity for a rear anti roll bar on a 3dr cossie????

Hello every1 Got the cossie as a bare shell now and have started to strip down the rear beam, amongst other things, ready for the powder coaters.......the small drop links for the rear arb have small bonded rubber bushes used for their location, these are knackered and half falling out. Cant see them listed under the items that are included in the polybush kits so presume they are a Ford only item...also presuming, knowing Ford, that they will be no longer availble.....so do I really need a rear anti roll bar as im running coilovers I can control body roll via the damping rate as in the same manner when doing away with the front roll bar for compression struts???

hi mate had mine done not long ago, I purchased a new set from ford. Cant remember the cost now, but im sure they still stock the items.
You can of course save yourself the hassle and buy mine

the 3dr ones are different to the saffs though as they sit on the outer part of the arm not the inner and the links are shorter- I bought a set about 5 years ago - I think they are the same as the xr4i - Doo is your man to find out if they are still available

CheeRS for the replies...aka is right tho, the 3dr is much different to the saffy...i'll drop into my local unhelpfull (especially to me as im a vauxhall technitian lol) Ford parts counter tomorrow and see what the score is.

The 3door ARB is a smaller diameter than the saph one too isnt it?

Was the rear one i meant Dan, but i dont actually know, hence the question.

If they arent, i think mine has a non cossie one on, as im sure its smaller than a saph one!

for the size of them they do absolutly nothing, espcially if you already have uprated shocker/spring combo. the thickness of the bar has already been overcome by your new shocker setup. leave it off pal.

Whiteline do various different length rose jointed adjustable droplinks that would fit .

As has been said, the 3-door has the smallest one on at 14mm compared to the 2wd Sapphire at 16mm, the 4x4 Sapphire at 18mm and the Escort at 22mm.

I have no idea what effect running without one would have on a 3-door, so can't help there.

Eagle fitted an escos one to his sapph and claims it makes a significant enough difference , doesn't answer the question about a 3dr though

Generally I don't understand the popular policy (on PF) of getting rid of ARB's front and rear. But it may be that this one is small enough not to make any difference. I would prefer to upgrade it somehow to thicker one then to get rid of it. ARB's are important part of the suspentions system and it's not like you can have real body control without them. It's like anther spring which works only during cornering.

Likewise, i agree that ARB's in general are a good thing,

How much do escos ones fetch from a specialist breakers, and are they are direct fit? (with new bushes of course!)

Of course he would, it's 3.5 times stiffer than the Sapphire one . I had one on my Sapphire as well . Unfortunately the 3-door has different rear anti-roll bar pick up points to the Sapphire / Escort.

Compression Struts and adjustable shocks will also controll body roll, lots of race cars use this and just use an ARB for fine tuning rather than totally controlling the roll. The compression struts provide a more solididity in terms of for/aft movement as well, on a road going car ie escos the ARB helps with this as well as trying to controll the roll.

they are available at my local ford parts, i enquired about them last week. Dont think they are cheap tho, cant remember the exact price but im sure he said Ł70 ish

yep i got something designed for that, as im in the same boat, i.e mag arms, so mounting points for an ARB are nothing like standard.

I don't think I fully understand what compression strut is then. I always though oit was just a link that connected TCS to ARB mount in a way creating something like normal triangular arm like on most cars.


Dampers have nothing to do with roll control i conrners longer then very very short.

i know that they must make a big difference as i haven't got one fitted to my estate and it's horrible in the bends.

Hi Frog,
Actually I've just checked and the Sierra one is just 14mm , the 2wd Sapphire is 16mm, the 4x4 Sapphire is 18mm and the Escort 22mm.

They are all interchangeable apart from the Sierra (3-dr) one.

To make comparison's in roll rates, you have to calculate them to the power of four.

So 16mm x 16mm x 16mm x 16mm = 65536 for the 2wd Sierra

and 22mm x 22mm x 22mm x 22mm = 234256 for the Escort

234256/65536 = 3.57 times stiffer .

I have no knoweldge of cossie estates, but bmw 325i estates have same suspension as a 325i saloon and handle more or less identically, certinaly no excess roll.
