Default transit owners

going self employed soon and need to get myself a van.

probably a used one, but functional.

i'm a builder and so i need to carry a lot of gear and other stuff around with me.

have always had transits when been employed by others and wanna keep the same type of van when a few of us go on our own.

i know i have asked this before, but any transit owners/drivers can recommend a van to go for? i need to consider my size (short lad with a very big belly) though and if i am gonna be in it for a few hours a day, i want a van that is suitable. a few 55 plates i am in now are not size friendly !

probably looking for a 51 plate or before.

thanks.

I just pasted a Sprinter today with my 135 down a short stretch of bypass!

IMO, lose some weight. I doubt may vans will come with much more room than the Transit. Your only option is to find a van with an ajustable wheel.

Make sure you get a van without a bulkhead as IMO thats what restricts the seat movement.

been looking at a couple of transits today, 85 T300 is pretty much what i probably going go for.

any ideas what a used one, 53 plate, with 40,000 or so on the clock would go for?

cheers !

Just get a slightly cheaper van and order a small philipino boy at the same time. That way he can drive and you can go in the back. No problems fitting in it then

i would stay away from a new shape transit if i were you.there nice to drive and that but if you are footing the repair bills rather than a lease company i would go for the last of the old shape.
i work on them everyday at work.front wheel bearings fail at anything between 30000 and 80000 miles.not a nice job to do and not cheap either if you can't do it yourself.the bearings have to be cut off the drive flange with a gas axe cos you cant pull them off.takes about 2 hours a side on average.

the rear drums do not come off with out a puller which usually wrecks the shoes in the process.

timing chain guides break up and get stuck in the fuel pump cog causing it to conk out.all the front end has to come off,new chain, new guides, new tensioner and new front cover.

when the flywheel starts getting noisey it fucks the starter up(£200+ from ford)when the clutch goes you have to replace the flywheel(£150 for the clutch.£250 for the flywheel plus 2-3 hours labour)

cam lobes fuck up when the roller rockers seize, which means front end off again.new chain, cam etc.

if you still buy one after that more fool you.

get the last of the old shape (w,x reg) and you should get central locking, air con and eletric windows and mirrors.

i have run the old shape for about ten years and put 500000 miles on 4 different vans and the most they have ever had is a new clutch every 140000.
sorry about the long post but they are such a bag of s**t i just had to say it.

yes because it does make a difference for me. i find a lot of vehicles small as a result of my size and so being comfortable in a vehicle means a lot to me.

difficult to walk miles mate - wouldnt get any work done

anyway havent gone for anything yet but still perfer the transits as they have plenty of space to get my building gear in the back

still working on the sites today but will be working for myself with a few lads soon and so we need a good runaround to get us out and about but have been put off buying now.

how do i go about leasing? any ideas, and how does it work ?

[sorry to keep mentioning this but i do need a bigger cab tho as i love my beer and that spells a big belly and its important to get a cab big enough for three of us] - any recommendations ?

much appreciated !
