Default Take 1 wanna-be mechanic+several tubes of Blue Hylomar and..

a perfectly good Cosworth engine and you end up with a serious urge to want to beat said wanna be mechanic round the head with a fookin baseball bat

Removed the engine from my 3 door today as it was a little knocky bottom end. Got another short engine to replace it.
Looked at the seal between sump and block and immediatly knew why it was fooked Removed sump and found at least 1 tube of blue Hylomar floating around in the oil and plenty attached to the oil strainer As a consequence of this pratt the shells are fooked but i think the crank is ok! But all could have been avoided if the wanna be mechanic had used a little bit of restrain when applying what looks like about 3 tubes of fookin Hylomar to seal the sump
Rant over lol

Didn't see that thread 1st time round Danny!
Here are some pics i took earlier.

Half of this was in the sump, some of it was wedged between the sump and the strainer and the rest was the only thing between sump and block

Crank doesn't look too bad there were bits of metal as well as blue silicone on the strainer

Shells are fooked!

This ring off No1 was in 2 pieces

Took the cam cover off the same engine 2 weeks ago Wyn and found a similar amount sealing that! No paper gasket, no half moon seals

Am i right in saying a 2wd should have a cork sump gasket? Its the 4x4's that don't have one? Or have i got that the wrong way round
This didn't have a gasket for the sump anyway.

Excuse my ignorance.. but what it hylomar?

Also, is that literally the remains of a plastic container? And it was inside your sump?

probably just used a standard one.

hylomar is a paste in a tube used for sealing.

hylomar is a gasket sealant, like a sticky soft glue that seals, but only to be used very sparingly or ideally not at all

Thought so mate but its been a while
So he didn't use a cam seal/half moons or a sump gasket
So glad this engine wasn't bought by me! My mate whom i got the car from bought the engine off Ebay about a month ago for 1500 quid and it was supposed to be spot on

Ehhhh????
The tube wasn't in the engine just its contents were used in place of a proper gasket! When the sump bolts were tightened the Hylomar has squeezed out of the sides and gone into the engine. Bit like eating a vanilla slice lol

Well for a start use high temp RTV sealer and not fookin Hylomar!
Squeeze out a continuous bead along outside of the bolt holes about 3mm round and do not put it on with a trowel
