how c*** is this you cant tow a car on a trailer
with a transit
i no it sownds stupid & the police officer that pulled us also said it was daft along with a vosa reprisentitive
most transits are plated to 3500lbs total tain weight so its ok to pull a trailer but when you put a car on you go over weight
he said the best thing to use is a 4x4 as to get a transit re plated would be a mess on + it would cost a hell of a lot more in tax

nop we got pulled today coming back fron notingham
we had to get one of our mates to come down with a recovery van & pick the car up.the police admited it was stupid but there hands were tied as its the law
they said if you have a 4x4 its classed as a multi use vehical & isnt requierd to be plated to any weight
also if the train weight is over 4500lbs you need a tacho

it was me who got pulled over today, which blacky is on about
what a load of cr*p it is, im going to sell the van and get a shogan or range rover etc
i cant understand it the trailer is built for 3.5 ton and the van can carry 2.5 ton so thats 6 ton overall you would think, but you can only be 3.5 ton train weight due to tax class of most vans or you have to have a taco and get the van uprated to carry a higher train weight
all this just so vans fall into the plg tax bracket so it all boils down to money as usuall

did they actually weigh it??
built to carry and actually carry are different....
train weight is down to braking I believe
if the van wasn't loaded then surely the train weight would be in spec?

there are certain transits that are useless for towing.
the DGW and the GTW must come into play for anything you tow. ( i have worked for vosa on this, with lots of experiance in commercial plated weights)
i have a van that i tow my rally car with.
you MUST abide by gross train weight. all those who tow a car on a trailer with a car are just plain stupid and waiting for a fine - IT WILL HAPPEN. fines are now up to Ł2000 for over weight in the light commercial class.
my car and trailer weigh in at 2050 kgs, my van loaded weighs 2900kgs, my gross train weight is 5100kgs. so i just make the grade.
a range rover or a landrover has a very large GTW, even more than the likes of my van, but have no spare carrying capacity due to there initial weight. some have a GTW of 6000kgs.
this is the law. simple as.

it seems simple to me?
if the weight limit for the train is that much and its based on the braking performance/rating stability etc of the towing vehicle then surely thats the deal and done for safety reasons?

oh and the use of tacho's is for hire/reward only pal.
if your vehicle is taxed PLG then its becomes tacho exempt . even if its a 44 ton artic, as long as its not for hire/reward.
recovery is also tacho exempt under different rules.
the towing vehicle on its own must abide to axle weights also, dont just think that because your total weight is less than the DGW that its ok, because if your front/rear axles are over loaded this can also induce a fine. this must also include 'trailer nose weight' so this then means extra weight on the rear axle , generaly in the region of 50kgs is a good loaded trailer nose weight.
all tricky stuff guys, and all being enforced very strongly.
im all up for people being fined for incorrect towing, as the first thing that usually happens is a crash due to over loading, the next is someone dieing due to someones careless incompetency thinking they can tow what they like.
wouls you drive your car with just the rear brakes ? as this is the effect of overloading, or with three wheels (out of four) ? this is the imbalance that can be created.

they said even though the transit was probably the best thing to be towing a trailer with due to the laws it was probably the worst vehical to use
its just stupid that its ok to use a vehical thats not realy a load lugger to do a job that a transit is easaly capable of & the only reson is tax laws

what van do you use markk mate, i understand everything your saying and my transit is perfectly safe and all the axles were under the limit, it was just the gtw is 3500 on most vans as is mine and i was 4400
most vans are down graded by the manufactuor to get plg tax
anyway im gunna get a 4x4 of some sort, cant be doing with there fines, lol

I had a a 120 with 5 stud axles on an S plate. That had over 5 tonne train weight and had a 2.8 tonne gross vehicle weight. I have just been out and checked my 3.5 gross vehicle weight Transit (PLG taxed) and that has a train weight of 5750 kg.
What model is you van?

im wih daz on this, what model of van do you have ?
must be small to have a gross train of 3500kgs
my van is an LDV convoy. was a single rear wheel, but due to unstability when towing ive converted it to the twin rear wheel, which includes an axle change and front hubs. but its still plated to the single rear wheel, even then its still has a design gross of 3100kgs and a train of 5100kgs.
if i ever bother to pay the commercial test station to have it re-plated then i would have a DGW of 3500kgs, and a train of 5500kgs.

dont think any of the transits would be that low ( maybe the connect)
im thinking that a 'know fook all' has pulled this guy, and tried to be the big man, .................................................. ........... and got it all wrong.

go and have a look at the chassis plate, get all the readings off it pal !

iirc yours has such a low train weight due to the alloys not being strong enough. if you had the same model with steel wheels i suspect the gtw would be much higher.

it does have a GTW of 3.5 ton then ,
DGW is the vehicle alone - Maximum Allowed Mass (as its reffered to) is 2.44 ton,
front axle MAM - 1.2ton
rear axle MAM - 1.35ton
gross train of 3500kgs
= well over weight
your van unladen approx 1400 kgs
your trailer approx 800 kgs
medium sized car 1350 kgs
GTW = 3550kgs = overweight.
all adds up when you put fuel into van, passengers, tools , spare wheels, etc etc
mine all up is 5 tons hence why i have a 3.5 litre V8 in the fooker

if the trailer has its own brakes doesent that count for something asin the law the train weight is calculated on a single wheel trailer with no brakes being loaded and depending on the brakes of the car or van in front
i have a long wheelo base transit 110 with a trailer that can carry 3.5 ton no sure of the towing wheight
i have towed my car every where with no problems with the van loaded and the trailer on the back
