Default Windows Media Player...help

When i'm watching video's in window's media player i'm unable to fast forward or rewind any of the vids! Is this right?

I've checked the latest version which is 10 and I have that installed so it should be up to date as they come!

Does anyone else have this problem or know how I can sort it, cos it's doing my head in!?

Cheers

Are you playing the videos from your hard drive, or streaming from a website?

Are you talking about when watching a "streaming" video ie something straight off the net, if so it is "buffering" (storing) information as it plays with a fast connection lets you watch as it does this, BUT you cant FF or FR UNTILL ALL the info is downloaded (buffered) if you watch there is normally a faint green line ahead of the play posistion bar, once the faint line has disapeared then the file is buffered and FF and FR is possible.

If not and on a file on your pc then yes you should be able to and dont know why you cant

LOL @ Bill, whereas I been in bed all day

BUT

Seeing as it aint working from his HDD I aint got a clue and will hand it back to you

Dan are you getting the buttons ?

Only thing I can think is due to versions and codecs, ive found some MPG's etc behave different to others, like just in explorer some give a "preview" thumbnail of clip others dont and they behave different in the player

Yes mate, they are there but are not 'in colour' like the rest of them, i.e. Play & Stop etc.

I've also tried pressing Control+Shift+F or whatever it to try it but it still doesn't work!

Ahhh... they're not fast forward and rewind buttons, they're track forward and back - use the slider to fast forward and rewind.

all videos, or just some of them? its usually cused by a corrupt header on the file youre trying to play, this can be fixed with a program like "AVI FIXER" which will repair the corrupt header

Bill, the i've tried using the slider to FF & RW but it seems to jump back to where it was in the video and continue to play without moving

Jim, you'll have to explain that to me mate! What a 'header' on a video? Oh, and it's all of them as far as I know mate

its part of the video file that contains information about the file, it tells media player how to play it. just try runing it through a video repir program, just google AVI REPAIR
