Default more employment shit... lol

what does this mean re: notice period for leaving:

4 weeks notice from either party or four weeks wages in lieu thereof increasing from the company's side with extended service.
also i have a letter that was sent to me before i started the job which is basically offering the job... on this it states:

Your appointment will continue until terminated by either you or the Company giving the other no less than one week's notice in writing. However, this does not preclude the Company from dismissing you without notice for serious or gross misconduct

Jim if these are from two seperate contracts then the last one you signed applies. The lower one looks like it's from an initial temporary contract, if you have only signed that then you might get away with one weeks notice.

the 1st quote is from my CONTRACT (well its called statement of particulars of terms of employment... thats a lot of OFs )

the 2nd one is from a letter of acceptance sent to me when they offered me the job...

i signed the letter FIRST, the contract LAST

i just dont understand what the pay in lieu bit means and the bit about increasing from company side...

they will inform you one week in advance that you are being sacked..
from that time on .. you will have to work out the period you mentioned.. (4 weeks)..

Jim I think it means the notice period and pay are not set in stone and the company can offer to let you work a longer notice period if you request it.

It means if you have been there a long time, they will give you more notice than the 4 weeks.

You have to give them 4 weeks notice if you are going to quit. They can, if they choose, send you home on full pay for those 4 weeks.

usually is enforced in IT jobs. Otherwise people spend the next month notice period stealing all the data, screwing up the network etc.
