GT turbo's (r's)
do even the newst ones still need water cooling.
as i believe so, but a mate of mine sed he knows of jap cars running gt turbo running with out coolant conecteted to the core.

I know of a lot of them running without the coolant too.
No issues yet, and some are drift and track cars, so get mega abuse.
But i always thought it was vital as well.
Well its not the GT series as such, its BB core turbos, can get GTs with a normal core.
But the ones im on about are BB and run no water.

Strange on this I think...
I know for a fact that the roller core on the shite MD 240R HAS to have the cooling due to the immense heat it creats du to the restrictive rear housing. I would have thought a more evenly matched turbo wouldn't produce anywhere near the same heat..

It is critical that the core on a Ball bearing GT turbo is water cooled. This is because the oil feed to the bearing is extremely restricted because the ball bearings only require the smallest amount of oil to lubricate, since it is the balls that support the shaft loads, whereas in a normal journal bearing we require oil under pressure to support the turbo shaft.
In light of this you must consider the oil supply in a Ball Bearing turbo is simply to lubricate the ball races, and not to give any significant cooling. This is why water cooling must be run in addition.
However you will always get clowns who will say and do differently just because it will actually run without water. Trust me they are VERY wrong!
