not fair.
The argument is why should you stop a perfectly LEGAL activity that under any other means would be seen as discrimination, as in what other recreational activity is banned that is legal? Forget death by passive smoking as if it's that bad they would stop it all together surely. If the government feel so strongly, ban it, otherwise STFU

100% agree with that mate

We have bans on smoking here and have had since July 2001. All restaurants are banned and clubs have to provide smoke free rooms which in essence means we end up with smoke free clubs really. It is a superb idea and its nice to go out and not come back smelling like an ash tray.

Also very strict on car mods here. Nothing that alters the fuelling is permitted. Noise restrictions are big and defect stations/cars are out in force each day to catch offenders. Ride height on cars cannot be lower than 100mm at the lowest point of the body etc. One intake mod is permitted so either a filter or an intercooler. Wheels cannot be more than 2 inches bigger than factory. Before anyone asks who would know, the trained cops here know as much as the enthusiasts. Some amazingly strict rules here.

Fantastic country and great people but tough as a modified car lover but the law is the law

At the end of the day it's natural to breathe but it's not matural to smoke. Smokers CHOOSE to smoke. Non-smokers don't have a choice when it comes to passive smoking.

Why should we have to breathe in second hand smoke and possibly get smoking related deseases for something we don't have a choice in.

Ban it for the sake of the health of non-smokers and give them a choice at last!!!!

Where has it been proved? We have it here and I dont see a noticeable difference in volumes of people now than before the ban. You personally may decide not to go to a pub or club because you can't smoke in it but do you think all other smokers will do the same? Is there going to be a sudden influx of house parties where people can smoke.

You should visit a country where a ban exists and see the atmosphere and the volumes of people

lol at the do-gooders rearing there heads on here. As Spadge said, none of us have a choice but to brathe in car fumes from highly tuned petrol guzzling cars that we all enjoy but no one seems to care about that. I wonder how many of you would be so happy to have your non-green motor banned from use. And of course all the people that suffer from asthma because of pollution caused by motorists. But hey thats ok isnt it

Not read the thread but IMHO Ad this can't come quickly enough, having asthma and also having smoke in my face all the time when I want to pop out for a drink aint good for me!

The first sensible thing this government has done in years!

So because non smokers dont want to breath smoke in, they should stay away from PUBLIC places where people smoke Thats just a typical selfish smokers attitude towards non smokers and one that WILL change now the government are standing up for non smokers

No these places wont be dead, they will still have the same number of people attending, its just some will be outside smoking So your saying your not ever going to a club or pub because you wont be able to smoke anymore? Good bye bye all the more room for non smokers

The govenment arent going to go back on a smoking ban in public places because its in the countrys general interests to protect non smokers

Any more details like the article from the local paper? Was it a survey carried out on a Friday night in the pub, was it banned for a month?

The only fair way to trial it is to ban it in all the places they propose to right accross the UK. It will never work if they ban it in some pubs as people will go elsewhere.

U don't go up to an exhaust and put ur mouth round it tho do u? And car fumes don't make ur clothes smell unless ur in an enclosed area with it - just like when ur in a pub with a smoker actually!!!

trevcannon Why should non-smokers not go into a pub just so smokers can smoke? A bit wromg imo, that's like saying a non-drinker shouldn't go to a pub because they don't drink. Oh wait there, J2O and Coke is available, just like the outside is available for the smokers!!!

The ban comes into force in Scotland on 26 March, and it includes works vans and trucks (but not company cars!)

Personally I'm happy to see it, speaking as an ex-smoker. Went out a couple of weeks ago and couldn't believe how smokey the pub was. I really did feel like shit for days afterwards. (and not thru drink, because I was the nominated driver!)

If smokers could have their cigarette inside a big space-helmet thing, with a glove to let their hand hold the fag while keeping all the smoke in, I'd be happy to allow them back into society, but I have rights too and one of those is to not inhale your smoke.

Oh yes, our ban also includes Royal Palaces and the Edinburgh Parliament. Don't know who is going to have to tell young Harry he can't have a fag in the morning!!!
