A good arguement i heard today on radio 5. Basically if u regard smokers as a minority in society then smoking romms have to be provided. The state spends billions a year supporting minortys be able to carry on doing what they belive is right. obviously that doesnt apply to british smokers who are in a minority. I do agree with the smoking ban even though i am a smoker. But the ban is supposed to be for PUBLIC places. How can private members clubs like my golf club be PUBLIC? This is where politics comes in. Phoney Tony was too scared to push for a partial ban knowing that most MPs supported the full ban that he caved in.

It's not broke in your opinion as a smoker.

Clearly the majority of the public and MP's disagree with you

Allright lads, I can tell you what it will be like!

In norway we have had this law about a year or two now, with no smoking in pubs/clubs/restaurants etc.

What its like?

You will be able to smell all the sweat and farts in the pub

On the good side (iam a non smoker...) its cleaner, easyer to see (until the beergogles takes over ) etc.

But when going into/out of a pub you will hit a cloud of smoke, as all the smokers stand outside the pub

i've recently stoped smoking and as much as wish i dint have to i decided it was a good idea whilst i was still young and able to. The worst thing is when u go for a few drinks and see others smoking or am with mates who do smoke its so hard and unfair that i have to say no. least now there wont be any temptation for me.

I can also understand both points of view, yeah used to anoy the hell out of me when i was out with non smokers who would complain about me smoking in front of them, but i respect there choice not to smoke so as a comprimise we would sit in the non smoking section and when i needed one i would leave them to it and go stand somehwre else

Not offended in any way mate

You are entitled to your opinion, just as you are entitled to smoke.

There is no argument on earth that takes away my right to not have to breath your smoke though

P.s. I was a smoker for 4 years myself (7 if you count spliff)

I've heard someone else mention something similar, yet another rank thing is the stench of BO from sweaty clubbers! Glad I don't go clubbin often!

I think it'll benefit a lot of people, and inconvenience a minority, so a good idea. Everyone will experience less smoke, people who don't smoke won't have to tolerate it. By the same token those who are trying to quit won't be tempted as easily to restart again, as it won't be everywhere they go.
When my dad quit he had to not only quit smoking, but quit going to pubs etc, until the cravings had left him. Maybe this will make it easier for people to quit aswell as to curb the incidence of passive smoking?

Default smoking

i think its a great idea ,nobody is stopping anybody from smoking just not in every non smokers face ,if a smoker wants to get health problems through his or her habit ,why should non smokers have to put up wiith it,(if god had intended us to smoke he would have put chimneys on top of our heads

It does when its some arse who cant take there drink and they beat up somebody whos just out for a good night. Never heard of anyone getting there head kicked in because of nicotine though.

BTW im a smoker who doesnt like smoking around non smokers out of respect for there choice and im trying to give up.....so bloody hard and zyban causes worse side effects then smoking.....stuff nearly finished me off.

The ban wont bother me....i dont even smoke in my house, i go out into the back yard which is a pain when its cold and wet but at least when i started smoking again i cut right down and my house smells nice

It would be interesting how the views on smoking have changed from say 1980 to the present.

Its such a shame another generation has been lost.

I can't quite understand the logic in that - why is it not okay to give children second hand smoke, but as soon as they are deemed an adult in your eyes, this suddenly becomes acceptable?
Mike when they are an adult they can choose whether or not they want to be in a place that may permit smoking when they are a child they go where they are told.
I have never smoked in my house or car etc...since Elliott was born and always go outside if i want to light up so i guess on the odd occasion that i do go into a pub it won't really bother me to have to do the same.

As for booze not affecting anyone other than the drinker try telling that to the wife of an alchoholic

Its about time you passive smokers paid for your own fags anyway

One view is it's discrimination against smokers and there will be doubtless many cases, human rights, blah blah from both corners. However why not have non and pro smoking pubs and see which one does more business or who goes bankrupt first

How ironic that on a forum where most people are running around in enviromentaly un-friendly cars with their cats removed and co's well over the limit that sooo many are preaching about smoking damaging their health Lets see if you are all so high and mighty when the same government bans all 'non green' motors which will happen one day!

The argument is why should you stop a perfectly LEGAL activity that under any other means would be seen as discrimination, as in what other recreational activity is banned that is legal? Forget death by passive smoking as if it's that bad they would stop it all together surely. If the government feel so strongly, ban it, otherwise STFU

Yes but i have no choice but to breath in polluted air caused by people like you driving cars that churn out far too much shite which is potentialy going to see the whole planet submerged at some point if the boffins have their sums right Dave!
Bet you wouldn't be so politicly correct if cars such as yours were banned
