Default Proposed Smoking Ban - What Are Your Views?

Personally I say it's a good thing, but being a non smoker I would say that But there is nothing worse than coming in from a night out whether it be a bar, restaurant, club etc and you stink of smoke!

So, what are your views, smokers and non-smokers, and what effects do you think it'll have in the pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants etc!

DISCUSS!

Think it's a good idea but will be weird to start with. Cant imagine pubs and clubs not being smokey..

Should be interesting next summer when the law is enforced

i smoked for 15 years and stopped on New Years i think its a good idea, maybe they should have a set room for people who want to smoke as its a addiction not a novelty.

The room could be set away from every where else in the club/resturant/pub etc so no one else could smell it, basically make it hard for those who smoke but givin them the option of a room they have to walk to

Well when I went to Ireland I thought it was a right pain in the ass... because I fancied a checky fag when pissed- but soon got over that.

What I did notice was that the crowds of smokers outside the bars and nightclubs in special cordoned off areas seemed to be quite intimidating.

Also the next day the floors around the bar areas were covered with butt ends which was extremely unsightly and ruined a quite picturesque place.

Personally as I have now stopped smoking and its been 6 months I get a bit pissed off with smoking- I go out now and still wake up smelling like shit and also have a bad chest from other peoples smoke where as before it was my choice to smell like shit and have a bad chest.

Yes I know it was me that caused the same from other people who dont smoke when I did smoke but it still upsets me....

Shings i didnt know you smoked

Have just never understood why people do it - no disrespect to anyone who does and enjoys it - as i know people who do, just really doesn't seem a natural thing to do?? Will never get it personally

I will be pleased when it comes in, if only because it knocks me sick in the morning, after a night out when my hair smells like an ashtray

I have been getting stick at the pub where i work, as i am the only bar worker who doesn't smoke It's all my fault apparently

Load of bollocks imo! The only places where smoking should be banned is where kids are likely to be Next they will ban alchohol from being sold in pubs which is also harmful to health and probably costs the tax payer at least as much with the NHS and the police etc etc....

LOL- Yes I have smoked on and off for years since I was about 18- to be fair I think it was when I started out going to work as everyone around me smoked and I had to sit with them in the smoking room or the pub areas where they were to accomodate their smoking OR sit on my jack jones.

Mostly I smoked when I had a few drinks.. I actually enjoyed it for a bit. Then decided I'd had enough of smelling like crap, coughing black shit up, yellow teeth ETC.... and quite a few of my mates stopped too.. also my dentist who has known me for 25 of my 25 years kept having a go...

So I dont anymore its that simple.

But having gone from 1 extreme to the other I think its the only way to protect people who dont smoke I am afraid- and I think there are going to be some pretty strong replies and reactions to this thread from a lot of people pissed off with the ban... which is fair I suppose as with any drastic changes to people life styles that are forced upon them- it never goes down well.

I have nothing against smoking personally.. what I do have a problem with is people like my uncle who got lung cancer from smoking, quit smoking, survived the cancer, got better and then took up smoking again!

MINT

I can't quite understand the logic in that - why is it not okay to give children second hand smoke, but as soon as they are deemed an adult in your eyes, this suddenly becomes acceptable?

I stopped smoking before new year, So I reckon it's a superb idea!

I hated passive smoking when i did smoke, now that i dont smoke i hate it twice as much, especially when enjoying a drink in the pub etc, or when someone has just had a ciggy and they walk passed, it REEKS!

Anything to aid health in this country can only be a good thing

Alcohal is totally different, It isnt harmfull in sensible quantities! smoking is harmfull full stop.

Good thing. I never used to think it affected me until I moved out of the parents house (they both smoked). Then I realised just how much better I felt in clean air.

We went to Dublin - felt so much better in the morning after a night out than I would have at home in smokey bars etc.

If tabacco was only just discovered today, it would without a doubt be a banned substance - what does that tell you.

I worry about anything that infringes on our civil liberties so am apprehensive about any legislation like this and am always thinking "What next"

That said what about my right not to be sat is a stinking smoky room next full of a bunch of smelly c**ts?

Smokers fuckin' stink and their habit is offensive to most non smokers so make 'em stand outside

Absolutely right !! Smokers make me laugh about 'their right to smoke'. OK, and I can see their point - but only to a point. What about my right to be able to breathe fresh air ? Funny how most never consider that..........I welcome a total ban, I really do. I'm not sure how they intend to implement this though. Have to say it works a treat on the Continent - in Italy I was in a bar for hours and came out smelling as sweet as I went in. It was bliss nothing worse than coming out of somewhere smelling like an ashtray. Disgusting !!!!

a sign in my shooting club reads....

notice to smokers, the residue of your pastime stinks my clothes and can ruin my health.
my pastime is alcohol. the residue of my pastime is urine.
how would you like it if i pissed over your clothes?

in a way that statement could be justified

I believe that smoking should definately be banned in restaurants, and coming from a former smoker that is something........

However i too have been to dublin and in the modern bars and restaurants non-smoking seemed alright, it was when you went into the really old pubs that it became weird, i mean these pubs were built for smoke, and having it non-smoking took away the warmth and cosy atmosphere that smoke added to a place (hard to describe)...................

So ban smoking in new premises, but it will definately take away the atmosphere from the really old 17th and 18th century pubs.........

sorry i seem to have a lot to say on the subject.............

I smoke, but I'm not too fussed about the ban. The pubs and bars at the Uni I'm at are non smoking, I thought I'd be more annoyed about it but it's ok... just means I smoke less, and save money - which is a good thing

i smoke and can understand the ban but theres gotta be a room for smokers to go. i like a beer and a fag like most people. cant see it working in clubs with out a smoking room. how many clubs are gonna let people in and out just for a fag. TRY NONE. and if they do you cant take your drink with ya cos the police aint gonna have everyone in the street drinking and i aint gonna leave my drink on the bar cos some drug head might spike it or a chav might chav it. its a bark

smokers contribute Ł9 billion a year in tax. it costs the NHS Ł3 billion a year to treat smoking related illness. so what the fuck would happen if every1 stopped smoking?

I think its bull shit completly banning it. make pubs have a seperate room. This ban was not brought in for health reasons but for pollitical reasons.
