Yeh thank fuck as its saved me a fare few quid. You could see the change in the ground after a foot of digging, i thought it was clay as it was wet but it was solid when dry and the building inspector had a real good poke around and said he was happy .

Update

Walls are starting to go up and today we finally got a full day of nice weather.
Outside walls are about 5.5 ft and inside wall are being started.
Ordered another 300 fibrolite blocks and 2 bags of sand

Front walls tied in as it will be a internally mounted roller shutter door

Coming on well. Why do the front walls come in so far where they meet the garag door, it would be hard to get a car in tight to the wall?

 

The space will be taken up 600mm with either worktops and cupboards or custom built steel work benches running along each side wall. Another 600mm walk around the car and the 300mm wall cavity and your at 1500mm which the wall is so the edge of the car should run level with the edge of the garage door opening, plus it will only have one car in there , a little red fiesta.

Aha, that makes sense then. I did similar on mine on one side but made it a standalone garage...I have 2 car deep workshop front to back but you have to go through a door off the main garage to get in....it keeps the tools extra secure and the grinder and now lathe fallout away from the cars...it is my own little man cave....the wife hasn't been in there for years.

Will you render? We did a tirolean "flick" on our house but render on the garage.

 

Yeh not sure which way iam going to go ATM . The front of the house is in traditional lime render with pebble dash which I like, but have also seen tirolean flick which looked good. I have also been looking at the new types of render which are coloured and are only 12 mm thick and come in pre mixed buckets.
It won't be done straight away as I need to get the electrics , painting , flooring done as I be got to get stuff out of storage soon lol.

 

Worth getting some John guest fittings and run an airline pipe round with the electrics...I have my compressor in a shed and just air line plug ins around the garage and workshop...some oiled, some not.

 

When returning the brickwork back so the garage door is on the inside, are you running a vertical damp course?

 

Yes mate a vertical damp course is at the back of the front block and runs up to the height it is atm.
I think there will be air lines as the tools are just far cheaper and last longer

A little update , just block work really nothing interesting lol but I will post some piccys.
Another 2 courses of block work and we will be at 2.5 m which is the eaves height. We will be then ready for the rsj for the door and I will need to get scaffold sorted. Popped into a scaffolders today and got quoted Ł750 wtf for a single rise scaffold. I think I will shop around lol.

Would have liked another access door in, plenty of room to the right hand side of the main door.

 

I got 18m of scaffold put up round garage with 2 extra platforms when building the peak up, came to Ł300
Would deffinitely shop about.

 

Cheers for that , that's more like it , I don't mind paying but iam not getting fleeced for fucking poles and some planks lol.

It must be private, no way does that have a tag on it, no handrails on the top or kickboards etc

No work done today as Jeff was off , I've ordered my x3 rsj which are 6 metres long , my custom steel which came in at Ł300 all primed so Ł710 in total.
They should be here Thursday .
Spoke to a few scaffold companies and there's one down the road from where I work so called and got quoted Ł380 for single lift all around the build. Knocked him down Ł120 as iam local and said it's good local businesses are supported by local people lol.
He's coming tomorrow to look at the site as they are only around the corner.

To be honest, your price isn't bad at Ł710. I'd of probably of asked for something similar.


I would however suggest that the beam with ledger plate which will be the one going over your door to be galvanised.

Rsjs should of been here today but only the one above the door turned up and the other 3 6 metre long ones will be here Monday , not bothered as I don't need them yet anyway and he kept me informed as to what was happening so Monday it is.
Saved a few hundred quid on blocks as we worked out we only need around 1000 instead of the 1350 , so had a few quid in the sky rocket only for the scaffold company to call today and tell me that the site very tight and because they have to go in 3 gardens he wanted another Ł120 so Ł500 in total . The only bit that pissed me off was that they came on Tuesday to look at the site so he had all day Wednesday to let me know , but no he left it until 1 today , so he knew I wasn't happy and said do you still want us to come and said yes for Ł450 cash and to be fair he met me half way.
Jeffs been off for 2 days this week but he cracked on abit and we are at eaves height at the sides and he's got the rear wall to build up .
Also building inspector said we can use smaller joists 5x2 instead of 8x2 so again saved a few quid then only to notice I forgot timber roof batterns on the quote so again that disappeared lol.

The steel was really heavy so we built 2 towers of blocks 1 each side and jacked it up by hand 2 blocks at a time which took about an hour until we was just above the pad stones then just lowered it on , worked very well but I will order a lift for the x3 6 m long rsjs as the centre one is around 4 metres in the air lol.



Oh and the scaffolds up .

Jeffs getting wall plates on Monday and x4 timbers to work out the angles of the roof so he can start getting the block work up at the front and rear. The other steels are coming Monday all being well

Cant believe all the steel used in domestic dwellings now,crazy.because architects dont have to pay they over engineer everything to cover their asses, could you have used 2 concrete lintels over the door which is what i did?

 

No not really as iam having facing brickwork detail above the opening for when I render it. You had 2 concrete lintels over the door which was 2 garage doors wide? , I take it you had no block work on top of it?.
I had no calcs building inspector had a look at the 6 m ones for the roof and said they are fine , the one above the door fuck me if that ain't big enough I don't know what is.
The only thing I know is it has to be built to regs to get it signed off so whatever needs doing will get done.

Garage is coming on nicely mate. Did u have to get planning permission for it?

 

Yes mate full planning as it within a metre of the boundary and the roof is over 2.5 metres high.
Planning isn't that bad Ł172 , its building regs that fuck you up , Ł380 just for someone to check your doing it right is abit steep , mind you he did do the calcs for the steels in the roof and my mate ended up paying Ł500 to get his calcs done recently.

Yeh I agree with you , it's crazy when you think what an old bit of timber can hold up.
The garage roof will be held up by x3 rsjs and x2 wall plates , if you go in my roof the whole roof is held up by x2 corners with a middle support which is one of the biggest timbers I've ever seen in a house it must be 15 inch x 4 inch and is just nailed together with one downward support holding the whole roof , tiles etc and it a good steep roof . It's still up thou after 75 years .
The only thing good about steels are they are cheap , it cost me Ł70 to build my 6 metre wooden tamper bar and that was at trade.

I used a CX90 extra heavy duty Catnic for above my door. Insulated, plastic coated designed to take the blockwork on the inside and take facing bricks on the outside. Made for the job. No messing about covering the bean afterwards or anything. Probably same cost as the RSJ.

 

When I looked at travis Perkins webpage I looked at the same catnic and for the 4.5 m span it was around Ł900 now I would of got discount but even at 50%(which I don't think I would of got ) that still works out Ł450 and my steel was Ł300 and to be fair its well over engineered.
Your opening and steel hasn't got the gable ends on , I've got another 2 metres to go above the door plus it's got x3 steels loading on the walls holding up the roof.

Update

Not much doing atm as the weather has been so bad it's unreal , rain , sun in short bursts , hail , high winds and more rain. Things aren't moving on as quick as I would like but I wouldn't work outside in those conditions so I can't expect them to.
He got the front roof timber mocked up and was going to start on the second at the rear but the down pour started so he went home lol. He also got the wall timbers fixed down on both sides.

You can now see the height of the whole garage give or take 100mm

Hi, i notice you cover the top of the blocks with dpc in beetween days of work, is this just to stop the rain washing joints out or any other reason? Looking good.

 

Only reason is so he can lay the next course if it pisses down at night and is dry enough to do a days work the next day.

Right finally we've had 2 great days of weather and jeffs been cracking on with it . He's started to get the gable walls up and mounted the pad stones up.

Today after Jeff got the gables up and pad stones mounted I hired a genie lift to get the x3 6 metre steels up mounted onto the pad stones. Went very well and we took our time so n mishaps.

Me and my lad mounted the timbers on the steels , a 1 hour job turned into a 3 hour job he was a nightmare but he enjoyed himself bless him he's only 2 1/2 years old lol.





Over hung the steel slightly half way into the insulation on both sides

200 metres of rafts 25mm x 50mm
650 Marley mendip old English dark red roof tiles
16 Marley ridge tiles old English dark red
8 wall straps 1000mm x 100mm bend

Hopefully that will be it apart from fascia , guttering , soak away and then rendering which I may start the top half before scaffold comes down.
