Default workbench protection

Recently I built myself a workbench for the garage using fence posts. Rails And scaffolding boards as the top.

Got my self a vice but before I put in on I need to coat the top with something to protect it. Does any one have any suggestions. What to use?

I have a sheet of 3 mm MDF screwed on top of mine with countersunk wood screws. Cheap as chips so if it gets wrecked its easy & cheap to replace. Mine has been on there for about 13 years and is still OK, it looks a bit naff in places but still serviceable.

I used kitchen worktop. My old bench was plain wood and ended up soaked in gearbox oil. Smelt lovely in summer

Cheers for the replies. I am after like what paint, Carinish. Or finish I should use for it to stop. Oils greases etc from soaking into it.
