Default Impact Wrenches

Hi all.

Not sure weather this is the right forum or not.

I've seen you can get 24v cordless impact wrenches, 12v impact wrenches you plug into your car, electric ones and obviously air impact wrenches.
Is there much difference between those 4 types with the power / torque of them?
The electric one i've seen is for upto 450nm, the cordless about 250nm, the 12v one upto 350nm and air upto 750.
Its tempting to get an electic one but are they reliable?

Cheers.

The only dealing I've have with ones you clip onto the 12v battery were shite!
Had one on a compressor which is pretty good apart from having a compressor running every now and then.
Just bought a snap on battery one and it's the best thing I've ever bought
Wheel nuts, hub nuts anything not a problem!
And it has two batteries which last ages anyway.

Realy depends what u want it for realy?

I've got this 450Nm Clarke 240v corded impact wrench, the only downside is the fact that it's corded, but it's cheap as chips and where i'll be using it i have a retractable extension lead so no drama there!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clarke-1-2...item4d004cf84e

It's been great the few times i've needed to use it, probably worth spending more money if you're planning on using and abusing it every day though, as like most things you get what you pay for.

Ive got one of the clarke battery powered cordless ones. Its done all ive ever needed for routine day to day jobs on my car for the last 5 years ive had it, including surviving a underside resto on a fiesta including all running gear and subframes off and on again.

Not sure how durable it would be in a high usage situation such as a garage.

Also dont forget you should always do the final nip up with a torque wrench anyway.

Cheers for all your replies.

I want one for light use, really for maintaining & servicing my car.
The Clarke corded gun is the one I noticed on eBay and I took a liking too lol.

First job I want it for is undoing the bolts holding the lower suspension arms on, with restricted access to the nuts, using an impact wrench on the bolts seems like the easier option. Unless anyone knows of an easier way.

Depends how strong and heavy you are aswell as how tight the bolts are, but they should be fine! It'll still be quicker/safer/easier with an impact wrench though.

I am quite a big guy and quite strong lol.
I used my 750mm breaker bar to undo a hub nut and it came off relatively easily.

Try Ł600+VAT
My mate's just bought one, let me borrow it to take the rear subframe off/put it on, on my 200sx, when I fitted polybushes/solid mounts. Fuck me it's awesome, made light work of everything I needed to undo!

Snap On without any doubt.

Sold my old one just before i got a car so its time to buy a new one when there on offer.

Best tool ive ever purchased well worth every penny.

Lad from work has a clark one broke the very first time it was used and never a patch on my old Snap On. You get what you pay for IMO

Depends. I use a Dewalt 18v ... 1/2 anvil.

If you have a Dewalt 18v drill then it makes sense to buy a naked 18v impact. (Ł100) might as well buy a light, grinder and radio charger

The option with Dewalt are unreal.

I've got that very same Clarke 450Nm impact gun from Machine mart.

It's a good bit of kit for the money.

It's managed EVERY nut and bolt off my cossy, hub nut's, crank bolt, prop bolts, all suspension, driveshaft bolts etc.

I've got 2 snap on ones, 14.4v (great for smaller stuff as it's light, did the rear beam on the cossie with it!) and just got an 18v one, not for Ł600 plus vat though, Ł175+
Win.
