Default Blast Cleaning Equipment

I'm thinking it would be useful to get some sandblasting (or whatever type of blast cleaning) gear as I'd use it quite a bit, but I'm not sure what to get.

I don't want to spend a great deal on it as I want to see how much I use it and how I get on with it first. I don't want anything too big or amazing as I have a local guy I use for shells and special stuff, but I've been doing a lot of things recently and don't want to mess around sending every little last bit to him.

I'd like a cabinet at some stage, but not fussed about that yet. One of the things I'd like to do first would be the steel wheels on my van, so think they would be a bit big for a cabinet.

Anyway, what kind of set-up have you got? I want something reasonably priced, but decent and reliable.

Cheers.

i bought one of e-bay for £100, a 20kg pot on wheels. it's worth it's weight in gold. just uses alot of air so you need a 3hp 250L, compressor at least

I've got a big 15hp compressor and a little 2.5hp portable one.

I bought a blaster this morning from machine mart and also bought a cabinet too, big enough to get wheels in. Pretty chuffed, it will do me!

Not tried it yet, but I'm sure it'll do everything I need it to!

I've got a cabinet which is quite good, I do need to make a bigger one though as I'm always being asked to do wheels and things like that.

Biggest issue with Blasters is the air usage. I've used the one shown above and it was ok but slow progress, that said its ideal for doing small spot repairs on shells, you just need to build some kind of shelter around where your working to help stop the media going everywhere !

Yes it's brilliant for doing components and wheels. Spot on for what I want it for. Will save not only the cost, but the hassle of taking bits in all the while. Mine will pay for itself many times over.

Any pics of this Mike? What sort of physical size does it take up?

I've got no pics to hand just now as its in my workshop and I'm posting from my phone but off the top of my head, the cabinet is 1500mm high, 900mm wide and 700mm deep, so it doesn't take up that much room really.

The pot can be wheeled around to suit, so that's not really an issue. Obviously that's not allowing for the compressor, but the blasting set-up is fairly compact. You can get smaller desk-top cabinets or smaller floor standing ones, but I wanted one that was big enough to get a wheel in and space to work round it.
