it will be poor quality but it will still work...

Dont waste your money on that old tat.
Get hold of your local Snapon dealer and see what used boxes he has.
You may be surprised what you can pick up for a couple of hundred.
And it will never lose any value either.

American Pro, Halfrauds, Mac Tools, etc etc are all made by a company called Waterloo Industries.
All pretty much tat compared to Snap-on.

I,d try e-bay for second hand snap-on.But to be honest,if it,s for home use i wouldn,t be too fussy.Just a nice big box will do.

I agree, that's why I suggested getting a nice used example .
The Ł700 you spunked on a Clarke (I thought they made shoes) would have got you a used Snap-on of similar size.
Oh and as for MAC.....

Now then lets see, I'm 33 in two weeks and I started in my first garage (a DeTomaso specialists) at the age of 12 on Saturday mornings until I left school where I continued working there until 19, where I moved onto various other garages including race prep dedicated workshops through to a motorbike workshop in Grease back through to my current workshop manager's roll......so thats 21yrs with various tools.....I think Ive worked out what earns its money and where...young man....

Just to add for the other folk out there, admittedly my tool kit is probably around 60% SnapOn, with the whole kit last insured for 17k inc box. But, I know what is worth spending the money on and whats not ie there's no point in wasting your money on a tool thats not going to pay its self off. Nor is it worth spending stupid amounts of money on some thing thats just had the Snap On logo stuck on it. A great instance of this is a tap and die kit I bought off the Mac tools dealer. Its the exact same kit that the Snap On dealer sells except Snap On list it as more expensive and also they wont swap a broken tap under warranty unlike Mac tools who are happy to swap it for you. The very same kit is also available off ebay for much less....suppose I could buy a few of them and stick a SnapOn sticker on it and sell it to the young black and blown man Snap on sockets, ratchets and spanners etc are worth their weight in gold....they've paid them selves off many times over. But that doesn't mean Im gonna buy a Ribe set off Snap On when Im only gonna use it once in a blue moon...hence why my Ribe set it US Pro, and they've been faultless in the 4-5yrs Ive used them. Basically buy the kit that's right in quality and price for what your gonna use it for....occasional weekend use does not warrant thousands being spent imo.

Have you seen one of the Foose boxes before Mark? I had an apprentice that bought the full set up when it came out and tbh you were really paying for the Mac name etc...the box and tools just looked like Halfords quality. Sound for home use though. There's a half decent stainless steel roll cab and top box set down Costco btw.

I hope you didn't pay more than Ł120 for your Hanson (the supplier for both Mac and Snappy) tap n die set or Ł99 if it is the non-adjustable version.
Cos they are the street prices off the Snap-on truck. Forget list prices, it's the street price that's important and in my experience Mac is dearer.

And as for ribe sockets, try the LTS range at Ł20 odd quid, cos Snap-on don't make them as it is an Italian fastener found mainly on Fiat diesels.

You have just hit the nail on the head there, Mac boxes don't hold their value.
That Ł500 is being 'invested' not 'spent', when/if you sell the box on, the chances are that they will still be worth Ł500

Nothing wrong with 'em chap, but ask a yank what a Fiat is and you will get now't but a blank expression.

Come to think of it, ask them what diesel is and you'll get the same response.....

I'm not loyal to the Snap On brand although most of my tools are Snap On, I think there are a lot of good quality tools out there from other manufacturers.

When it comes to tool boxes though, IMO, I think the Snap On boxes are miles ahead in terms of quality than the others I have come across.

A few years back I was going to chop my box in with my Mac dealer against a Ford Racing limited edition box. I ordered the box but after looking at and trying my mates identical box to the one I had ordered, I cancelled my order. I just felt that the quality just wasn't there compared to my Snap On box.

Yes, it was a pricey box but you get what you pay for!

the mac name isn't worth a toss at the end of the day, owned by stanley, now sell facom and britool and whatever other tat mac dealers can find from consolidated tool warehouses etc... to flog off cheap on the van to people the be able to provide no or little back up on the stuff they've sold.

to your average joe or average petrolhead, stereotypically a toolbox is a toolbox big square metal red thing in most cases.

i dont care if your using stuff at home, in work everyday, jsut for hobbies etc.....

you wouldent pay a good few garnd for a leather re-trim for a car then put it in a 50 quid lada would you? same thing with tools, why keep your investment of decent quality snap on tools in a poor quality box?

get something thats gonna stand the test of time!! properley designed, properley put together, go to a market leader!! not a company thats following and copying ideas of somebody who has OWNED the tool maket for 90 years!

the stuff speaks for itself, really does!

if the post starter isnt on this guy's patch then he cant sell to him anyways, so how is it a biased oppinion as he's not going to be taking money off the guy if he's not in his area.

and a bit of advice, go see your local snap on guy, leave him your mobile number tell him your budget and i gaurantee he will happily give you a call when a trade in comes in.

to your average joe or average petrolhead, stereotypically a toolbox is a toolbox big square metal red thing in most cases.

i dont care if your using stuff at home, in work everyday, jsut for hobbies etc.....

you wouldent pay a good few garnd for a leather re-trim for a car then put it in a 50 quid lada would you? same thing with tools, why keep your investment of decent quality snap on tools in a poor quality box?

get something thats gonna stand the test of time!! properley designed, properley put together, go to a market leader!! not a company thats following and copying ideas of somebody who has OWNED the tool maket for 90 years!

the stuff speaks for itself, really does!
We must be very different people lol i buy good tools as they need to last im not buying them twice but a tool box is a tool box i hate work and theres f**k all (lol) chance im spending the same amount on a tool box as i can on an older r1 for fun at the weekend on!. My 600 pound clark bottom box / 300 pound clark top box did me for about 5 years now has a 100 pound second hand snap on mid section and a second had mac side box that was 80 pounds as i ran out of space but has been doing me fine for 8 years now. 3 of which were on a daf aid van!. It make me laugth when people at my work get a snap on box on one of there rip off finace deals lol just to say look at my big shiney tool box that owes me about 3500 pounds lol
