Default XR3i Tuning help.

Hi guys, I am looking at tuning the XR3i, and was wondering what I can expect BHP wise from her?

I have a friend who is an engine builder/tuner who has said he can build me a 200bhp engine, is this really feesable?

Any info on getting the most gains is much appreciated

Oh and she is a MFI

No mate not unless its turbo charged, basics are good exhaust straight through, tubular manifold,k&n 57i,cams, porting and polishing,power chip and throttle bodies but to be honest prob be cheaper to buy drop rst lump in!

Well he reckons by putting a RST head on it, grinding and balancing the crank, lightened flywheel, porting and polishing the head and a fast road cam will give me 200bhp when coupled with my straight through exhaust and manifold and K and N.

Is he talking dog toffee?

Bud how much you got too spend and do you want to stay NA? There are many routes to go down: RST ENGINE,ZETEC on throttle bodies,ZVH or ZETEC turbo,mk5 xr3i 130bhp engine,RS2000 engine 150bhp,ST170 engine

He talking out his arse bud a standard mk4 xr3i is 103bhp and an RST is 130-133bhp standard and all that on an rst would barley get you to 200bhp

Oh ok, shame really. Ill have to look into sticking an RST lump in her eventually then. cheers for your help.

You would need to go the FI route to get 200HP and even that isn't that easy!

So essentially you may as well just swap to an RST engine.

Just out of interest, how hard is it to do a RST conversion?
What sort of money are we talking to get a reasonable Bhp?

Easy really, engine and loom Ł300 ancilleries gearbox arb other bits and bib Ł200 all in bout Ł600 main things you need are rst rear drums as they're bigger and mondeo front brakes for better stopping power

Tobe honest bud unless your going for good power you could get a blacktop zetec for Ł200 and set of throttle bodies for Ł200 some management an away you go you'll have 150+ bhp good torque and its usable and wont have to worry about detonation

How hard would that be to do? by black top are you talking 2ltr zetec? Is this something you could do in your garage?

yeah 2ltr blacktop (zetec)out of a focus or late mondeo. Yes I put 1 in my old orion 1.6lx in my front garden its easy. Get an rst gearbox bolt it too the engine you use your xr4i cvh mount cut piece off with grinder engine and box will go straight in

I completely agree and thats my dilemma, she is an all matching numbers car at the moment, thats why I was wondering what sensible gains I could get from my engine.

I dont expect her to be the same as hot hatch's nowadays but id like to be able to suprise a couple of people now and again, she is just so lovely I dont want to get rid of her, ive fallen in love all over again lol
