Default Stupid flaming fuelling problem

My 2WD Saph has an annoying problem. Sometimes I can go to nail it, and it'll rev fine to about 3.5K, then it stutters badly, won't rev any further, spits and pops out the exhaust, and the smell of fuel is really bad. If I drop it a gear, then it can clear it and it will be fine. Then it'll run fine for a while, then out of nowhere, starts misbehaving again.

I took it to Tremona Garages here in Soton and they said its most likely the crank sensor that controls the injectors and the fuel pump. Im about to get them to replace it, but would just like some input on any other possible causes.

This is my first Saph and apart from this issue, I am chuffed to fook with it. Wanted one since I was 10 years old!!

If anyones got a set of standard front lights as well, let me know. I hate twin headlights on this car.

Cheers guys & gals

Matt

Yes they are all OK, Tremona checked them out. They think I might need a phase sensor as well, I have no idea what this does. Also, something about a rear temperature sensor is causing my Cossie to seriously drink fuel????? Any ideas.

Had this with mine. Turned out to be the temperature sensor. Engine thought it was running cold ALL the time, dumping so much fuel in, when it was put on a meter it went off the scale. Change the temp sensor first and see if it sorts it, otherwise you'll end up with a big bill for lots of bits you might not have needed.

Hi Matt,
Do you have the Morette twin headlamps on your car? if so do you want to swap for original cosworth sapphire headlamps? Perhaps we can sort something out?

Thanks ptr3500, I'll ask about the temperature sensor. It did it again on the way to work this morning. Sounded like an asthmatic ant!!

Mike - PM me and we can sort something out.

i had the same probs with mine.changed phase sensor, its the one on the distributor,it cured it a little bit. Then i changed ign. module also helped but the car still cut out and last i changed the water temp sensor and the car is like brand new .The water temp sensor is at the back of your head near the dipstick under your water pipe.the best way to fit the sensor is undo the water pipe, then undo and releasse the sensor then replace as simple as that. p.s the phase sensor has to be gapped 0.4 although i gapped mine at 0.5 hope that helps mate

Hi, ive got a saph running big injectors (slightly bigger than grays) and 2bar of boost. used to run fantastic.

Now i have a similar problem but i get the misfire at around 5000- 5500rpm. ive changed everything: Distributer as a whole (inc phase and cap) Map Sensor, coil, leads, loads of plugs, ignition pack, water temp sensor and have checked the loom to the ECU.

Ive had loads of sugestions to what it could be, hence the huge bill. I still think its over fueling but is there a chance that a water temp sender can be faulty out of the box?

Need help too

Ok, well the problem is now fixed. I had the following issues (deep breath!!)

A knackered crank sensor
An engine temperature sensor that fell apart in my hands
The wrong plugs (something about the wrong heat range)

All replaced and the car is running sweet now. My only other problem is that I keep booting the thing and it costs me a fortune in fuel, the missus is none too happy.

Thanks to all your replies, no doubt I'll have loads more questions in the future!!!
