Default Standard L8 EPROM file

Hi folks,

Looking for a standard L8 image file to write to a 27-series eprom so that I can iron out some running issues (erratic idle, hunting, issues after warming up) I have with an MSD stage 3 chip.

I have no original Ford chip to test, so need a standard binary in order to burn to an rom to exclude an ECU/map issue (since it's the only thing left to swap now and I don't have another complete L8 to do that with).

I'm hoping the fact I have the wasted spark driver installed won't interfere with the running of a standard chip?

The standard L8 Eprom is NOT suited for wasted spark. It needs a distributor and a single ignition coil.

The MSD page for the driver states it needs no software mods to the ECU, which would imply the standard image would work with it:

Since this thing runs like a dog with my stage 3 chip, it can't hurt to try a standard map to rule the modified software out. Worst case it won't fire up and nothing is lost except one of my stock of 27c128 chips.

I'll be giving it a try this morning.

Well, it runs with the standard L8 EPROM, still trying to get the idle right...

The standard L8 image (from http://rpm.planetaclix.pt/ecu/IAWeprom.htm, btw) ran much better, however it still wasn't perfect (probably the fact that it didn't know anything about the bigger 803 injectors?).

Out of desperation, I tried an unknown EPROM that came with my engine (which was all in bits when I bought it), labelled as "Cos 4x4 803". Clearly for dark greens, but for what else, I don't know; since the engine was a non-runner and has been since completely nut-and-bolt rebuilt, including a refurbished T3, MSD loom, wasted spark, radtec fmic, closed-loop added, etc.

I was amazed that it ran far, far better than it ever had in the past - I could get a steady idle around 950rpm once warm, from cold the ISCV worked, and I could also set the AFR to 13.3-13.5, which according to my conversion chart, should be in the ballpark for 3% CO. None of those things I've been able to achieve in the past. I'll give the guys at MSD a shout to see if they can help me figure out the issues with the pre-written Evolution chip, since they've been really helpful with my other purchases.

That as well as every other aspect

The pulse widths will be totally different for the injectors, the MAP sensor different etc and also for a T34, potentially.

If it were me I would buy a known calibration for piece of mind, which is fairly inexpensive. With it being in bits like that, you don't know what ill informed meddling has been done in the past.

As to it causing the idle issue, extremeley unlikely. Can you elaborate on it further, anyways there are several reasons, ranging from a poor tune, through to the base idle not being set correctly.

I did buy a known chip - the MSD chip was specifically for my setup when I bought from MSD it after rebuilding the engine completely (every sensor is new, all new Bosch injectors, rebuilt turbo, by nut and bolt rebuild, I mean it - it's a MK1 Escort that we have built from bare chassis up). It's their 320bhp version with the closed loop control and other add-ons... But it has never been able to idle properly, has always stunk of fuel, the ISCV never seemed to do anything, was really eager to stall and has been impossible to achieve a reasonable AFR at idle.

Swap to this no-name "dark greens" chip and the difference is night and day. Clearly the standard chip was not going to be optimal, but short of taking the car over to Blackpool I didn't have much of an option than to try several other maps.

I will clarify that I am not having a go at MSD; Stuart has been nothing but helpful with the kit I've bought from him. But there's clearly some interaction between the MSD Evo chip and my car that means it just won't run right. Swapping the chip was the last thing I had available to try.

If it was me, even though MSD are in Blackpool I would book it in for Stu to go through everything and get it set up right. Having the car on the rollers is always going to be better than trying to diagnose what problems it may have over the phone.
