Default 2wd/4x4 Rear Beams are they the same?

Im currently converting my 4x4 saph cosworth to rwd. Will i need to change the complete rear end i.e diff, shafts, arms, beam to 2wd items?or will 2wd diff and driveshafts fit in a 4x4 beam?

Thanks in advance for any advise.

all will fit except diff. You can go from 2wd to 4x4 swapping it all over including diff but not the way your doing it bud

Apparently all u need to do is cut a bit somewhere of the top of the diff and it'll fit the 4x4 beam IIRC with the 2wd bits obviously lol.

the 4wd uses a 7 inch diff
the 2wd uses a 7.5 inch diff

the ratio's are not an issue is you are going from 4wd to rwd, the issue is that the 7.5 inch diff uses thicker shafts and 108mm output flanges , where as the 4wd one uses 100mm flanges and thinner shafts

also, 2wd cossie shafts are specific to the 2wd cossie, every other sierra/granada with rear discs, even the escos, uses the 100mm flanges and thinner shafts and are easily interchangeable with each other

there are 3 different shaft lengths on the narrow shafts, but only 2 on the 2wd shafts

the diff, even though it's bigger in the 7.5 inch variety, will still fit, the top slot where it all bolts in is just a hollow casting, so chopping this off to make it fit is not going to cause a problem as it will just make it 11.5 inches long rather than 12

that's the beam side of things taken care of, next you'll be needing to consider the arms, because the holes may be bigger on the 2wd ones to fit the thicker shafts through, although i'm not aware of anyone fitting the thicker shafts to different arms as the normal way to do this is buy a whole complete 2wd rear end

hope this helps

I always understood they were different and even with the 2WD, there are two different versions, something like Ford redesigned it by 5MM to change the geometry?

Dojj, out of interest how does cutting the top of the diff work, as the problem is the width?

the case of the diff has several holes with which ot mount the diff to the beam

they are all the same on the 7 and 7.5 diffs other than one at the very top, which is further out on the 7.5 diff

however, the bolt that goes through this runs from side to side so you simply chop a bit of the casing off to effectivly shorten the tube the bolt has to run through

also, the granada and sierra diffs are slightly different throughout the years as some granada diffs had 2 long bolts going through whereas the sierra had bolts that went into the diff and not through

this may explain things a bit better

see the smaller diff having a hollow section where you can see the bolt going through while the bigger one hasn't?

The 3dr has different arms, but the 2wd sapph and 4x4 sapph have the same arms. They are the same part number, so must be the same.

The only difference between 3dr arms to others is the arb mounting bracket the arms them selves are the same

All rear shocks are the same fitment for Cosworths. It's the standard Sierra that has wider fitment rear shocks on the bottom.
