All turbo charged engines use some oil, depending on their condition and the owners driving style. Your dad's saf will use some but probably so little that its barely noticeable. Unfortunately, Your car sounds in pretty poor shape. Ford manuals used to quote that the cosworth engine could consume up to 1 litre of oil every 6oo miles but i've yet to see a road going one that ever used that much day to day....... Either you have a very nasty leak somewhere, or the internals are worn and in need of a rebuild

i use 15/50 oil and use my car every day and i`d say i use about a litre in 5-600 miles and i thought that was bad lol
i would just keep topping it up and using it until something happens mate..........

That's good advice Saint, Oil is not that expensive and as long as its checked regularly and topped up when it needs it then the engine will probably last for years. My 4x4 uses , on average, half a pint every 1000 miles or so , which i reckon is pretty good for a 12 year old , 150mph car with 134,000 miles on the clock

Mine probably uses a litre every 1500 or so. I don't keep tabs to be honest, just check it every time I use it and top up as needed. Tis better than having to rebuild it when it goes bang cos there's not enough in it. Been there done that and bought the T-shirt

My stage 3 cossie uses about 1 litre to every tankfull, but I do drive it hard. I've noticed a slight bit of play in the turbo shaft and the sump does leak a bit.... so I guess it does use a bit more than what its supposed to??
I've been advised that you should fill your oil to the 1/2 way mark on the dipstick if your caning it and about 2/3 if your motorway driving.
Who agrees with this?
Does anyone here suffer from the oil level on the dipstick fluctuating. What I mean is... you check your oil from cold.... notice its low, its about 1/2 litre min 2 max right? Then you add what you think is right.... check it and the level is where you want it!..... Then you drive it for a few miles say.. then check it again and its over the max....???? I dont get it.... why can't anyone come up with a oil level gauge! (COME ON FORD RACING GET YA FINGA OUT!)
Does anyone else suffer with dodgy oil readings, consumptions?

HYBRiD T a lot of hgv's come with oil level gagues and are not to be trusted,i mean are we to lazy to check a dipstick, any way as to oil use if you find it a bit to much try using the correct oil which is 10w 60 ,problem then solved

Yeah I appreciate what your saying, but Renaults have had accurate oil level gauges for over 10 years.... I have never used another oil other than Castrol 10w/60 or Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w/50.
So would you say that my oil consumtion is excessive?

what are you getting to the tank,i get about 220 to the tank, also if mixture is wrong the petrol could be washing the oil in the bores, this is how a cossie on gray,s usually uses more oil

Yeah I understand what you mean about the greys, i've only got 803's but yeah I havn't had the mixture checked in a while and I do occasionally get a puff of black smoke when I back off. The stem seals are brand new, so I guess it must be running a little rich. Would play in the turbo shaft cause the turbo to use more oil than normal?
I have found oil in the turbo air inlet pipe and thought that maybe the breather system that was already on the car, (which consisted of a separator and 3 pipes, one of which went into a K&N filter) might of had something to do with the excess oil consumption. What does anyone think?
I can get about 300 miles out of a tank, but most of the time about 200. I havn't had the mixture checked since my stage 3. I'm just about to fit a Group A K&N cone and Spec-R breather system, hoping that this will rectify the problem.
Fingers crossed!

Engines done 65k. As far as I know its never been rebuilt. When I replaced the head gasket, the guides were sound. Had the head checked by PJ Motorsport and it came back with the thumbs up.
The only way I can see the oil getting there is through the breather system, which i've now changed. Havn't driven the motor yet as i'm still in the process of fitting some new bits. So I guess when I drive the motor next i'll find out whether or not the old breather system was the cause.

The strange thing is that the car is absolutely mint, it runs perfectly and pulls like a train. It smokes slightly if i really open it up but thats it.
Would fitting a breather kit from baileys or alike help matters?

Never used to use ANY in mine at all, even on track days, that was in std. spec. Since i had it rebuilt and stg.1 uses a canny bit, can't remember how much cos i haven't used it for 6 months! Doesn't visibly burn it tho and haven't got any leaks
