Default Saph 4wd brake upgrade options

Anyone know of any options for upgrading without buying an entire kit? I.e. Any way of using larger discs (eg st170) and any other calipers that can be used?

2wd seem to have loads of options but never seen anything that work for 4wd, due to the offset I guess.

Hi mate long time no speak, a popular option is to fit FRS brakes (330mm) IIRC however I know this isn't a straight swap, I thought you could do this to either? The 2WD is fairly well equipped as it has four pots up front where as 4x4 has singles all round, so I guess some change the calipers as well.

Martin, thanks for the reply buy I've got a feeling the offset is wrong for using pretty much any other ford disc. I know FRS discs are a popular mod on the 2wd but never heard of it on 4wd.

Hopefully someone will have done it to prove me wrong!

Offset is probably the wrong term and don't know the exact figures but In crude terms I think the 4wd hub sits further out than the 2wd, limiting disc options. Hopefully someone will know. Whatever the exact reason you never seem to see upgrade options for 4wd except whole packages. I fancied cobbling something together like the 2wd boys who use brembos and FRS discs.

You're laughing then as you have a few options being 2wd.

I know about 2WD, I was asking about what you need to do for 4x4 just out of interest as you mentioned packages.

Yep ET35 I am pretty sure is 2WD std offset.

Are the 4x4 wheels different size to 2WD?

It's the hubs on 4x4's that cause problems. Mainly the TRE area.

I think you can get a Hi-spec kit that uses 310mm disks and standard calipers. FRS brembos will fit too, not sure what disks to use though. I'm pretty sure that the 406 V6, Fiat Coupe and Alfa V6 4 pots are the same and may be cheaper.

To be honest though it depends what your looking to spend as i'm sure Tony could sort you a decent compbrake kit at a good price.

xr craig, when you refer to the 4 pots 'being the same', what are you referring to? ie same as 2wd or 4wd etc? I have a 2wd and am looking for 2 new front calipers so wondering if these would fit mine?

cossiedad - as paddy says mate, they are the same calipers are the Focus Brembos, which should fit yours no problem. You'll just have to get some mounting brackets made up and decide what disks to use.

The height of the discs is an issue, as they can clash with the track rod end if too close.
The height of the 4wd disc is 36mm, the 2wd are 55mm, the FRS are 324mm with a height of 53mm.
The nearest ford disc would be a rear disc from a mustang 2005 on, 300mm and 35mm height, but would need re drilling to 4 stud, but is only 19mm thick.

No, you are right. I once bought a used set standard brakes of a saph 2wd to fit to my 4x4. The discs wont fit, the though the steering arm. And to use the calipers of the 2wd, you must make some custom brackets..

So I gave up, also find this an interesting topic!

Are you suggesting the disc of a ST170 will fit on a 4x4?

I very much doubt it as the disc will touch the TRE. Like Tabetha says, off the shelf disc options are probably very limited. Best bet would be bells/rotors.

I don't think 4x4's have a particularly cheap option when it comes to brake upgrades. That said, decent brakes are worth every penny.

Agree, I don't think there is really an easy solution for the 4wd other than buying a kit from hi-spec or similar which is obviously quite expensive. I was hoping a set of larger discs from maybe an st170 or st220 could be used then I'd only need a bracket made up but don't look like this is possible.
