Right having grief at the moment my car before always used to cool down when i was driving then warm up when im in traffic and fans kick in etc as it should but recently it doesnt seem to cool itself down when im on the motorway it just stays at the same temp all the time wether im driving or stationary does anyone have this problem or am i just beeing paranoid ???? ive spoken to a very good friend of mine and he says its ok but im just checking as im not confortable with it

Any views will be very helpful

m8 happened to me my rad was cloged up try cleanin it up.worked for me .

Fitted a brand new alloy rad mate new fan switch thermostat new gauge sender as the old one was broken and still the same !

Ain't got a way of checking mate but on my temp gauge it stays at 3/4 (on the O)

i would have tought if its staying the same temp in all conditions the thermosta's working correctly, i know when i changed my temp sender to the temp gauge my used to run around the o mark but on my secs monitor it was showin water temp of 79, i would keep a eye on it but imo everythings workin as it should other wise u would be over heating!

It's normal, the gauges are about as honest as a politician!!
Don't forget that on hotter days there is less heat reduction from the same airflow as not such a large temp differential, have you rewired your fans btw ?

I haven't rewired the fans mate I've checked the relays and fuse box and all looks ok.

mines exactly the same tony had a new radtec alloy rad,fan switch,thermostat and the fans rewired at nms last month and it runs exactly the same as yours mate karl and ollie assured me there is nothing wrong with it i was being paranoid lol they reckon the gauge on the dash is wank and dont show a correct reading. i went to ford fair sunday and even in the traffic jam it stayed in the same place and the fans just kept cutting in and out so think yours is ok m8 cheers paul

Just change the temp sensor in the block, its pennies to buy and easy to do.

I think he's done that already mate, from what he said about the sender for the gauge, but could be wrong.
My 4x4 will run upto 91 degress (on SECS) before the fans cut in. Worth keeping an eye on, but if you're confident the fans are working and they're not staying on all the time then i don't see a problem. Make sure the wiring etc is all 100% though.

My ecu turns my fans on at 95C and off at 92C, but on the gauge reading this can be anywhere between the bottom edge of the "M" to mid way between the "N" and "O", even though it at the same temp each time in reality.
Even though the fan wiring etc looks right, it needs doing, the wiring is 20+ years old etc, just not worth the risk, was pretty crap to start with, and that was 20 years ago!!

My fans used to kick in Just before the red on the gauge, When i changed my engine it was the same.
I changed my fan switch, dash sender and put an 82 degree thermostat in and it was still no different.
After all that i cut all the shitty ford connections out of the fan loom and run it up the centre of the rad and over the top (cut out 7inchs of ford loom) and now the fans kick in on the top of the O on NORM.
When doing this the Earth wire looks all black inside so the wire has lost all its goodness still works fine but i will replace with my own direct feed from the battery to power the relay and fuck the ford bit off out of it.

That sounds just fine tbh, ive fitted a new sender/fan sensor and full rewire and mine sticks on the gauge at O, then my fans cut in just before the N when in traffic etc and it bumps down past O on the gauge then cuts out.

I know what you mean with tha paranoid issue mate , im on edge just before my fans cut in waiting for the tamp to go down lol , thats why I got a switch in the cab for the fans just incase.

Lol thanks everyone it seems like the fans stay on when I'm driving though then when I stop after about 3 mins they turn off and work as usual the only thing I'm worried about is the fact they stay on when I'm driving.

I actually find the gauge quite accurate, mine usually stays around the R then on cooler days it runs around the M when driving along, fans kick in between the M and O.

If you have fitted an aftermarket radiator you need an uprated fan switch otherwise the fans stay on due to the heatsink effect, these switches are far superior anyway with a better span bringing the fans on at a higher temperature and only a few degree span opposed to the OE 86 degree and off at 77 some 11 degrees!

I have a standard radiator and suffer from the same problem with the standard switch, trouble is they sap so much power and it will end up melting the fuse etc very soon.

Just chuckled my way through this thread, cant really believe it .

Owner to mechanic 'my cars overheating' what temp is it sir ' Its a tad over O mate & ive seen it at M. Well sir we work in degrees here so why not fit a proper gauge . Love the guy who says his is accurate usually on R but varies between M & O. CLASSIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The gauge really can't be relied upon, at the end of the day if it's not overheating 99% chance it's perfectly ok, if it is a very hot day and going slow enough fans will take much longer to go off and be on much sooner purely due to less cooling effect as the ambient is that much hotter.
I know on a really hot day when driving mine with the old rad and air deflector on it could take well over 5 miles at 50 mph to cut fans off once started after having been sat in traffic, so I binned the deflector, massive improvement.
Some things you can do to help is to panel in the rad between rad and bumper anywhere air can escape instead of going through the rad as air will take the lazy(easiest) route, but certainly shouldn't be needed on a std set up in good order.
The 4wd set up is vastly better purely in flow terms from the pump, but a well maintained 2wd system is perfectly adequate.

Also if you have a front mount intercooler this can have some effect to the temp rising more over the standard setup, thats what I found out.
Worth getting the uprated sensor from MSD as it cuts in better.

going along i get 79 degree. my fans kick in at either 92 or 95 degrees with a motorsport developments fan switch and 82 degree thermostat. But as tabetha says it depends on how hot the outside/weather air is. And i dont know if this helps but i Think hss improved my temps a bit is, that i jet washed through my intercooler.

i had that exact same issue when i went from a standard rad to a ally rad!!!!

the uprated fan switch will cure this issue fellla,

i belive due to the ally rad you get heat soak which gives the standard fan swith false readings,

No what I said was it stays at M on cooler days which is accurate as the ambient temperature is lower hence the running temperature is lower and then stays at R on hotter days it's not perfect but acurate enough, fans always come on at top of R, I don't need a gauge which tells me the exact temperature.
