Two questions about G reg '89 2.9 xr4x4
Do all XR4x4's have LSD ? & are the oil pumps easy to replace with engine in situ and are they a common item that goes wrong as oil light come on (plenty oil in engine) been told pump may have gone, its done 99,000miles with regular servicing.

99.9% sure they all have LSD'S, could well be pump on it's way out but first make sure it's not a dodgy light pressure switch, does sound like pump but never overlook simple things! Only way to tell is to see what oil pressure you have. Think you may need to remove front cross member to drop sump to get to pump.

As said I would check the oil light wire first, if this has chaffed through anywhere and is touching earth it will put the light on.
Very unusual for the pump to just go, without any warning signs first, rocker gear would get seriously noisy first, take out the oil pressure switch, disconenct king lead and spin the engine, see if there is a nice strong jet of oil squirts out the hole where the pressure switch goes, this will do no harm whatsoever, but you did right switching off right away, if you get a nice forceful jet of oil upon spinning engine then look at wiring.
Could well be a dodgy pressure switch.
If the oil pump proves dead it's engine out time.
