Default Starting Woes

Brand new engine. I turned the key, it started first pop!

Then, revved a little, and then started to misfire so I shut it down. Don't have anyone at home at the moment who can wiggle connections or check plug leads and don't want to leave it idling when it's brand new.

Does the same thing every time. Starts fine on four cylinders.

Then, when you give it some revs, it hesitates and starts to run on 3 cylinders.

There isn't any smell of unburnt fuel at the exhaust, and because it starts fine every time, I don't think it's flooding.

Suggestions welcome

Thanks

Have the plugs ever been soaked in fuel ?, if they have they rarely work properly again.
If you still have trouble identify the cylinder that is causing it by pulling injector clip off.

My flatmate arrives home from work and he is a mechanic.

He places all the spark plug leads so they are loosely touching the top of each spark plug making them easier to pull off once the car is running to see which cylinder is misfiring.

I start it up again...and it runs perfectly before we even had a chance to try some leads!

Mechanics have the magic touch or something haha.

Took it for a little test drive and it went well. Only one small oil leak from the oil pressure sender adaptor.

Plugs weren't soaked Tabetha. I had the injectors disconnected when turning it over testing for oil pressure with plugs out too.

First time I cranked it with fuel, it fired up.

Thanks for your help

The cops are NOT lenient here at all!

I had my car impounded on the spot for 28 days once for allegedly 'racing' when doing 70km/h in a 50km/h zone and had to go to court to defend dangerous driving charges! I was lucky to not lose my license!

And another time I got a huge fine for speeding but that was justified. If you are caught travelling more than 40km/h above the speed limit, it's instant loss of licence.

You can even get your car ordered to take a Warrant of Fitness (MOT) check if they say the exhaust is too loud, or it can be ordered off the road and require a certification examination if it's deemed unsafe eg no springs (some twats still do it).

i can vouch for that! - i was in NZ in 2004, driving my hire car just outside a place called Rotorua. There was a single lane with a tractor driving on it holding up 3/4 cars, so i overtook them all. One of the cars i overtook was an unmarked police car!

i reached 160kmh (100mph) and then slowed down once i'd overtaken.

he pulled me over, made me drive to Rotorua, interviewed me, took my driving licence off me and posted it back home and took my hire car away from me!

Well Tabetha, clearly your stories from your one cop from NZ are exactly like every single other cop in NZ...
