Yes sway bar = anti roll bar, for us proper speaking dudes!!
3 door ones are crap, massive difference fitting a sapphy one.

Big improvement isn't it ?
I had a xr4i, and fitted the 3 door rear arb, nearly as useless so grafted on a sapphy one, that worked a lot better.

Yes, I mean the anti-roll bar. The reason I asked is because my rear beam and control
arms came from Adrenaline Motor Sports and the rear sway bar mounts are on the inside of the rear control arms. The Merkur XR4ti sway bar mounts are on the out side of the
control arms. I wanted to get some pics of how it's mounted in a 3 door Cosworth to get some idea of which way I was going to fix it. Am I going to use a Cosworth rear sway bar
or change the mounts on the control arms. Danny asked me where I wanted the sway bar mounts I thought the XR4ti and the Cosworth had the same design the Cosworth just got a thicker bar so it's my fault.

Thanks for the help,

Jeff Webb USA

The xr4i and 3 door cossie here had the exterior arm mounts, as yours does.
The arb on the 4i was 10mm and the 3 door was 14mm, don't know the size of yours.
The 2wd sapphy one is 16mm, 4wd sapphy 18mm, and escos 22mm, all same shape and all fit on the inner mounting points on arms .
It's a dead easy mod to make a fixing and weld to the flat box section that the diff hanger sits on, did this on my old xr4i.
The difference with the thicker/stiffer roll bar and it's shorter length is immense, best thing you can do to a 3 door shell.
A lot say a 22mm rear arb, sapphy shape is way too stiff, personally I disagree, and that is why I use a 22mm adjustable arb on the rear of me sapph, currently set at same stiffness as escos, such an improvement over 16mm and 18mm bars.
It's also easy to make up and weld on mounting points on the arms where needed too.

I think the Scorpio's over here have the short bar that uses inside mounts on the arms.
Not sure how thick they are will have to check and see. That would be a quick and easy part to get over here.

Thanks again,

Wait wait.

You can't fit a Scorpio sway bar to a Merkur that easily. The Merkur has a different tank. I've got a Sapphire parked next to my Merkur and a Scorpio bar hanging from the rafters. Even with a Cossie rear beam and bits on my Merkur it's a bugger of a fit.

I can measure both for you Jeff, they appear the same. Don't forget the Scoprio has the weird plastic tank too. Also the drop links are in a different spot from Scorps and Saffs.

Easier bet is the 3 door arb.

Forgot about the scorpio one, the problem with the scorpio one that is a similar shape, and 21mm for a scorpio cosworth, is the centre straight section is that bit longer.
I've only ever seen one merkur but assume it will be our xr4i shell wise, don't know about tank differences but may well be due to different safety legislation.
Could always go for a custom jobbie, keep same shape but make different mounts for much thicker diameter bar.

Yeah tabetha we have a stupid tank. Internal pump that I can pee faster than. It's like a Mustang tank in that it's 4 feet wide, has two straps, a skid plate and lots of extra area to rust.

Of all the rear options I haven't tried it is the Saff bar on the rear. I took the Saff bar off yesterday and will have a look at it mocked up on the Merk soon. I have Saff rear arms on the Merkur for this very reason. I'll report back for Jeff and at the worst he can fab up some new mounting points on his arms.

There is also a TON of cheap nascar bladed stuff on eBay he could access.

I am going to run a fuel cell, so all bets are off untill I get that mocked up in the car and
see what I have to work with. I'll get back with everyone once I get that done.

Thanks

So are you cutting out the spare wheel well also? Or putting the fuel cell in there?

For others reading this as well the Merkur tank and spare tire well are totally different from other Sierras. The chassis rails go the length of the car and the 909 stiffening plates are just Merkur body items.

Have a look at my wing area:

you can see what Ford did with the 909 plates

Yes, I have cut out the the spare tire well. The plan is to use a fuel cell from a 60's Mustang. My father has a 66 Fastback with a fuel cell in it so I took My measurements off his car.
My cell still hasn't gotten here yet so I'll have to wait sort everything out. The cell drops in from the top and has a flange around the outside that bolts to the floor. You can check out my build
On Merkursport in the member and their car/ project garage section under1987 XR4Ti build to see what I’m up to.

It's nice to see how the cars are different in other countries, I remember when I had my mk1 mondeo(usa contour) I wanted the front indicators/turn signals that had the extra illuminated light as running light(drl).
Me GI mates are always nagging me about "correct" spelling/speaking!!
Ones just got a Mercury Cougar XR7, yummy looks nice!

Anyone have a 2WD Saphire rear sway bar they want to sell? I think A 4WD bar would
make my Merkur too tail happy. I live in the USA so I would need it shipped over here.
I would also want the end links just incase they are different then ours.

Thanks,
Jeff Webb

I have a boggo std 2wd, 16mm, sway bar, with 2 sapphy end links(longer than 3 door).
Happy to sell it to you, but happier to tell you from direct experience with same body car as you that the 4wd one works better, and does NOT make it tail happy in any way at all, and given the choice I would go for the 4wd one, not a 2wd one, but your choice.

Tabetha,

I'll take the 2wd bar. How much do you want for it? I'll try this bar first but if the car under steers at least I have a place to go to try and make the car neutral.

Thanks,
Jeff Webb
