Default damage when piston melted? reuse 2nd hand piston?

Hi guys, Ive fell in love with dougs saph... I need to have it if doug will sell, but problem is it has a melted piston, do you think the damage will have fucked the bore? and will i be able to reuse a 2nd hand piston at all?

cheers and wish me luck lol

i would say the bore has been damaged, i bought an engine before with a holed piston about the size of a cm2 and the bore was scored to fook, had a rebore on all 4 cylinders and fitted oversized pistons. plus the valves and seats had also been slightly damaged so had new fitted also. i wouldn't skimp on anything, will come to bite you in the ass

i was thinkin that... well id buy 4 new gen coswoth 0.25 pistons... theres a local dude that will be able to rebore the cylnders to match so get him to do that, cheap and good too. Get the crank out and reground 0.10-0.25? with new bearings and gaskets and seals

who you using for the machine work? where abouts are you, i have to admit i was looking at his saph and it does look the tits, even with a rebuild and maybe a new turbo it would be a good way forward into cossie ownership, my mate had a magenta 4x4 which cost him 7k took to PJ'S for a 330bhp conversion and then p/x at juction 28 for 5k when he got bored, so a saph with a desperate need of a rebuild will still come under this figure.

Im from rugeley mate i used to work in great wyrly at link tow bar's... Only local. Im waitin for the fella to get back to me like, if it goes it goes il find another, just been pricing up a few bits.. 4x new mahle 4x4 pistons £460, new group a headgasket £50 from matt lewis, new gaskets through out.. about £60/70, new bearings- £70-140, thats the longest route...

probs what il end up doing if i did get it was see how bad the damage is, if it hasnt scored the bore get a 2nd hand piston and a group a gasket and run it like that, i did it with my starlet and worked until the piston itself cracked(too much power for stock internals so forged)

ader @ gees automotive in rugeley mate, hes a legend.

dougs piston has only just started to go so i wouldnt do anything until you whip the head off; you've got to remember the rings are pressed against the bore so it could well have done no damage at all

It may just need a hone or at worst a bore - whatever you decide, make sure you use Halesowen Engines Ltd for any machining, 1 Vine Lane, Bromsgrove, B63 3JG. (Reyland uses the same company!)

dont grind the crank unless you need to!
