3dr Gearbox Noise
Managed to ge the engine running on my 3dr project, and now i have a new probem.
I bought a gearbox around 2yrs ago (when i started the project) apparently reconditioned - it was very shiny to say the least, and supposidly full of oil. Anyhow, stupid me didnt check.
I've fitted the box started the car up and the gearbox is whining quite bad, took a look at the oil levels, found there was none, was a little miffed, anyhow, went and got 75/90 Gear oil (millers) and a tube of molyslip for good measure, and filled the box up. Started the car and its still whining, if anything worse!
If i drive the car it sounds like its got a straight cut box and on tick over its whining away, if i depress the clutch the noise goes away but you can physically hear the noise slowing down to a stop, then let the clutch out it starts righ back up again.
The car drives lovely, the gears all feel tight and engauge without any problem at all, its just got a terrible whine, no clunks or rattles etc just a whine.
Do you think its because the box its just new and needs "breaking in" or does having it stored for 2yrs without any oil in it more likely to have done damage? The cars only been around my street so far as i havent MOT'd it yet so i havent put any miles on it yet

Sounds more like the release bearing, and VERY common as well.
It may have adjusted up too much on the clutch pedal, lift the pedal with your hand, and with your thumb push the top of the pedal plastic part(the quadrant) forwards say 2", whilst still holding it forward release pedal downwards so it sits on its stop.
The a few presses will reset the adjustment.
Give that a try, storing a box won't damage it.
DON'T put molyslip in boxes, it's not needed, gear oil is more than suffecient, you NEED friction for the synchros to do thier job effectively.

gearbox needs to come out; the actual relase bearing takes seconds to change
this is a release bearing http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-RS-Coswor...d=p3286.c0.m14
easy to do, just lots of labour, should be able to do it within an hour and half assuming you have a ramp and correct tools

I thought the release bearing would only whine when the clutch is depressed though as its not used until then is it? I could be wrong though (usually am!) when i depress the clutch the noise goes away.
There is an input shaft bearing and another bearing which name i forget now also if memory serves me right, these run when the box is engauged, could it be these? (i hope not!)
I have a spare release bearing now i've seen the picture, if you guys think its that then i'll drop the box and chage it

There's no way of dropping the box half way down or something (any kind of trick to it) that saves me time is there?
Then the bearing is just a pull out and replace yes?
Cheers

So its a good idea to change mine then i'm guessing. For that i'll need to drop the prop shaft, disconnect box from engine and cradle, remove gearstick and drop the box, is that right?

drop craddle gearbox cradle (you'll need to undo the 2 13mm bolts holding the gearstick by removing gator inside)
remove box bolts
drop gearbox
if you have an aftermarket exhaust you might have to undo the exhaust from the turbo housing. (i know i did)
you will have to pull the gearbox away from the motor as the bearing sits on the spline. no need to drop the gearbox on the floor if you have some sort of craddle to hold it

Thought as much mate, cheers!
No cradle though, when i drop cossie box's i always use my chest/stomach as the cradle and drop it on me, seems to work well. Was dreading it though casue i do all my work on my driveway under 2 trolley jacks so its never easy can only just get the car high enough to get the box from under it, even more crampt when i'm under there too

Yeah got 2 axle stands i stick under for safety.
Yeah i've re-built the entire car on my drive with the basic of tools, takes so much longer than if you had the right facility

Axle stands, HORROR STANDS, that's what they should be called, I refuse to use them.
I use an old railway sleeper cut up into squares, of about 1 foot by 1 foot, totally secure and all for £13!!
I don't think car weight will bother them with being used for 200 ton+ locos.
