Coilovers questions????????
List of questions.
1. AVO or GAZ?
2. Easy to setup?
3. Ride quality?
4. Body roll?
5. Straight fit? (or does anything need reinforcing ie rear shock mounts? )
6. Compared to an aftermarket spring/shock kit (ie Spax/Koni ect) what are they like?
7. Value for money?
8. Cheapest place to buy from?
A bit of basic history, the car is a 1992 3dr 2.3 16V 4x4.
I want to get my suspesion a little better.
Car ISN'T a daily drive or a track car, more of a play thing.
I'm considering coilovers, some say don't bother and use a good spring/shock kit.
The thing is a coilover kit isn't much dearer than say a Koni setup.
I've read GAZ are good but the car might need 'altering' to suit the rears.
AVO do however state they are a direct fit, opinions?
What my main objective is to reduce roll (front really)
When the car was RWD I had H&R springs (FR & R) LIP gas front shocks and Monroe senatrac rears.
24V 29mm front ARB and 24V 18mm rear ARB and strut braces. Handling was nice and well balanced.
Since converting to 4x4 I basically have the same setup but with KYB 4x4 front shocks and a Sierra Cosworth 28mm 4x4 front ARB. I did use the 24V RWD ARB shimmed for extra castor a while, but since fitting the Sierra Cosworth front ARB I'm getting more body roll from the front but better/lighter steering. The 24V ARB was OK but I needed more castor which I just couln't get as it was shimmed as much as it would go. Handling with the shimmed RWD 24V ARB was fine, just that the steering was heavy.
The Sierra Coswoth ARB was 'supposed' to be an Escort Cosworth 29mm one, Still for £20 off ebay you get what you pay for.
ATM I'm 'considering' coilovers but I'm open to sugestgions.

I have just fitted GAZ standard coil overs to mine and this is what i think -
Ride quality is slightly bouncier than my old Koni's
Easy to fit - very
Adjustment takes 2 mins per corner
price for the item - very good
bodyroll - my 3dr feels like a roller skate around roundabouts
I can't comment on AVO but if they are supposed to better than GAZ then they must be excellent.

20K+ Super Poster.
AVO(coilovers) will be way harder than a std set up with normal springs shocks.
I run avo coilovers, seriously little roll, very hard ride, though most find it comfy as I do, took a person in it who has a VXR nurburg jobbie, only a few weeks old and he said cossie was more comfy than his VXR, which really did surprise me.
There is often a bit of a bash needed in the rear wheel area, as the spring can scrape the body, but only needs a light touch.
Some say you must reinforce the top mounts, I don't agree, but do agree to using a strut brace is essential.
At least it's a easy job to replace springs on a coilover if you find them too hard/soft, the fronts without even taking strut off car.
Just as a point of interest after I fitted my poly rear diff mount, I didn't put the rear arb on, knowing from previous experience without a rear arb how much roll it produced I was expecting the same, not a bit of it compared with std mount the poly stops a good 80/90% of the roll that you'd get from the rear without arb on a std bush, the difference is night and day, get one of these as well, you really won't be sorry to do so.
