It is the size of the exhaust housing. bigger number=bigger size and that is more bhp you can get from it. But But the + of the smaller ones is less lag.

Pretty much as above, except the larger sizes tend to have more of a kick when they come in as well, owing to the fact they lose that much more not on boost power.

in very basic terms

.48 - very quick spool up, but normally runs out of steam at high RPM
.63 - not as quick spool up, but can still provide power at top end of RPM
.55 is in between the .48 & .63, the best of both worlds

i had t34.55 on my road car and was very happy with it

the number is stamped on the inside of the exhaust housing where it bolts to the manifold

I am also curious to know what exhaust housing I have on my Sierra Cosworth T34, is it possible to measure the outside diameter on the house to get this info? And if so, what figures should a .48 or .55 have?
I cant find this number on mine T34.

I cant find this number on mine T34 and I am not planning to look inside the turbo for now.
One good member here told me it could be .48....

Not sure now then there was a receipt in my service history to supply and fit a .63 housing to my turbo so i just presumed that they had .48 housings as standard and this was an upgrade.

Anyone know the Ford finis code ( if indeed Ford still do them? ) for the crushable washers that sit either side of the banjo bolt that holds the metal water pipe onto the turbo?

nice discussion,

can someone tell me who's selling the .55 housing ? I'm gutted because my T34 is to small (.48). Even with massive cam and very strong actuator it spikes at 25psi and collaps to 15-16 psi. I'm working with the french cosworth so dont shoot me. The engine was build by a friend from the UK and i finished it. i'll tought it had the .55 turbine...but its the 48.

turbo technics are the only company that actually make the .55 housing!I doubt they will sell u just the housing, they will want to sell you just the turbo(they will probably say they dont have enough in stock!)you might be able to get a company someone like tony at turbo systems to supply you one via turbo technics, they are not cheap around £360 just for the housing!you might be better off trying to get a .63 as these are more common and usually alot cheaper

every escort i've ever stripped have eith er had a .55 or a .48 fitted if they were standard
i had 1 in that was around a year old, totaly standard and among other things it was getting a .63 fitted, which was quite noticably bigger than the standard 1
so i still stick with them being smaller than the .63 standard
i cant see them all having been changed(inc the 1 above) for smaller housings before i got to them
