If he's ill maintained his YB and not changed the oil in ages, then it may now be a similer viscosity to that of gnats piss...which would high light any other wear in the engine...or even just tolerences that are at there limits, which if we're honest Fords clearences could have allowed a bus to drive thru when new let alone 20yr later I said valve guides tho based on the fact that its very common wear problem with those symptoms especialy on a YB.

Oil change will help, as said due to viscosity of oil may havebeen drastically lowered especially if MOBIL 1, as it's well known for this, and will not so readily squeeze it's way past the seals.
Without doubt it will if it has any more than about 60,000 have totally shagged guides and seals, maybe also exhaust valves and all the seats too, yb heads lead a very hard life.

Im going for the turbo, it doesnt need to be full boost to see if its worn.
Mine started doing the same a few weeks ago and it turned out my seals were worn on the turbo, aswell as my bearings and my shaft
Full rebuild and no smoke

i would have to say stem seals an valve guides. you would know if the
seals went in the turbo mine caused a smoke screen on the motoway
when they finally let go lol. anthor give away if its stem seals an guides
is if its been sitting over night and ya start it the next morning and it blows
blue smoke, as the oil slowly drips down past the stems an guides and sits
in the cylinder. i would find it hard to be the turbo as you say when you drive it the smoke clears, if your turbo was fooked you would have smoke
all over the show when driving.
